2021 Hurricanes Miscellaneous Thread

I'm not a fan of the idea that the Canes should trade one of our 3 goalies before the deadline. If there ever was a season where you better have 3 goalies you can trust at some level, this is the season.

To me its crazy to entertain doing something like trading Reimer. What happens if Mrazek's thumb flares up and becomes an issue that sidelines him for a couple of weeks? Are we really going to ride Ned into the ground? Would we ever trust Warm or Helvig or Bibeau enough to actually put them out there?

Reimer is already pretty much paid for in terms of his actual salary, so there is little real money to be saved. While I think that a Mrazek/Ned rotation with Reimer the odd man out makes sense, I think it would be a bit reckless, given that Mrazek is just coming back from a significant injury, to entertain shipping Reimer off for anything before the April 12th trade deadline. I mean, if someone wants to give us a 1st round pick for him, than by all means take the risk. But otherwise stick Reimer in the press box for the final 21 games and be thankful you have him as the #3. Maybe Reimer gets a spot start or 2 in the last few weeks if things are 'settled' in the standings.

Yeah, I'm good with carrying all three. The Canes lost Mrazek in the post season just two seasons ago so it doesn't take that long a memory to recall how important insurance can be.

Evgeny Svechnikov on waivers again
That darn 10th game played.

The thing is, Detroit could just leave him on the active roster. Its not like they are in any sort of cap trouble or bank all that much more cap room with Svech the Older on their taxi squad.

Someone is going to claim him this time around. It won't be the Canes, he doesn't provide any real fit for what we currently need on the ice even though he might provide intangibles for Svech the Younger.

So, I'm on my lunchtime walk today listening to The Athletic Hockey Show podcast--which, if you don't listen to, I highly recommend--and was pleasantly surprised to hear Ian Mendes and Sean McIndoe answer my email submitted question about when Martin Necas is going to get some love from the national hockey media! It comes up at about the 35-minute mark...

(The best part is that they accessed me of submitting via a Sara Civian burner account!)

Here we go again...maybe. Brandon Hagel from the Blackhawks has entered the Covid protocol. He played more than 12 minutes in each of the games there.
Nope ... nope ... nope. Seriously. Crossing anything that will cross over here.

Wallmark on waivers from Chicago
Well ... he never really found a role there and if they are seriously committing to being a trap team for the rest of the year, then he has nothing to offer anyway. With Dach back on the big team's payroll, if somebody claims Wally then it's dollar in/dollar out for them. And Chicago is pinned at the max Cap.

And honestly? If McGinn is going to be out a while, it would be worth giving some thought to claiming the guy. He can play center or wing in your bottom 6, kills penalties and is a known quantity around here.

I agree with this. If we are sure that McGinn is going to be out for weeks at a minimum, Wallmark is a perfect fill in as he already knows what the heck we are trying to do out there. His cap hit is so small that he wouldn't preclude us from being able to make other moves. I would rather have Wallmark out there in a checking role than asking Geekie to play that role.

It would cost the Canes around $300k additional to make that move (less after deferments and escrow). Not my money of course, but to me this would be a move that makes sense. It might also make sense to the dozens of teams with better waiver priority than we have.
