2021 Playoff Thread | Round 1 | Habs/Leafs

You know, I read this crap and all I think of is not developing players properly.

Here’s my conspiracy theory: If the NHL assigns Pollock to the game they want the Leafs to win. If they don’t they want the Habs to win.

A lot of it reminds me of the same scenario as 2009, bunch of players with contract expiring at the end of the year, going in the season with high expectations, having a disappointing season, coach fired with interim replacement, quick playoff exit with disappointing showing against a major rival.

Yup but there won’t be playoffs next year

WTF is this crap? Sounds like he can’t justify his reasoning.

I heard something on the radio in the last two weeks of regular season that could justify it.

Mario Tremblay was talking about Romanov being undisciplined with the length of his shifts.
He had the longest TOI average for his shifts on the team and has had 1:30 or longer shifts multiple times during the regular season.

That was a problem early in the season, and it was still a problem at the end of the season.

Tremblay was saying that Romanov is a stallion that has a lot of stamina, can skate forever and feel he can handle longer shifts, but he’s clearly less effective after 50/60 seconds, and you just can’t have a rookie taking those liberties.

There were a few goals this season that were scored against the Canadiens when Romanov was on the ice after long + 60 seconds shifts.
One against Vancouver near the end of the season I think, which would have shown that the coaching staff had not succeeded in fixing this issue with Romanov.

If DD felt he couldn’t trust Romanov on that front heading into the playoffs, that’s a big issue.

No offense but did Ducharme write that for you? Romanov should be playing. Not even debatable.

I’m just speculating and sharing information that I haven’t read anywhere that could explain the reasoning behind Romanov not playing.

I did not mean to say it justifies it for me, but that this would be DD’s justification.

I don’t buy the “DD is dumb he doesn’t know Romanov is better than Merril/Gustafsson narrative”.

But if the long shift reasoning is indeed why Romanov is not playing, I believe this is a very bad look on the Montreal Canadiens coaching staff and truly shows their inability to properly develop players.

A good bench boss should be able to rein in players, or get them to buy into the team concept.

That failure would be on DD, it’s his job to find a way to solve the situation and have Romanov play.

Exactly. It’s on the coaches to get him off the ice. If he doesn’t, then bench him during the game for a few shifts so that he gets the message. He was good enough to play in 54 of 56 regular season games but can’t play in a single playoff game due to Gus’s and Merrill’s presence? Seriously?
