2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

With all the coaching vacancies, and maybe one more to come, there is lots of chatter about Quenneville returning. Dreger notes that he’s suspended by the league and any team wishing to hire him must get approval from the league first. But he makes it sound like a slam dunk approval process.

In other news, the British Columbia Hockey League is going independent, it will not renew its agreement with Hockey Canada. While all provinces have a Junior A league for players wishing to maintain NCAA eligibility, the BCHL is first among equals, with more than 400 alumni on NCAA rosters last season. Canes prospects Cade Webber, Kevin Wall and Massimo Rizzo all came through the BCHL.

As I read the post loss reporting from these various markets I'm struck with just how little we seem to learn about the dynamics of good teams. A couple of thoughts ...

1. Writers will NEVER be comfortable with lineup flexibility so whenever you lose, no matter how it happens, if you shift your lines and pairings around, then your tinkering caused instability and led directly to your defeat. God forbid you employ a goalie rotation and then lose in the first round, because you have screwed up so many ways that the writers pool can't even count that high. And look, it doesn't matter if you extend the rotation into the playoffs or if you try to ride one keeper ... if you lose, then whatever you did was brain dead.

2. Nobody ever seems willing to carry the remainder over from the trade deadline in case they discourage GMs from entertaining everyone at the trade deadline. Boston and the Rangers both made significant rental moves at the deadline to great applause and general approval. Meanwhile, neither team made themselves all that much better, since both finished the regular season in roughly the same place they would have done if they sat pat. Tellingly though, both teams made moves that made them significantly weaker defensively and it bit them in the ass in the playoffs. Sure, over the course of a full season you'd like to think some of those guys add enough offense to make up for the historically awful defensive play (Kane and Tarasenko) and the never ending string of turnovers (Bertuzzi), but given the compressed nature of the rental that almost never happens. Will anybody remember and count the cost next year when it's deadline fever time? Nah. You'll all get angry at me for pouring cold water on your trade ideas again.

3. Even though almost all bad thinking in hockey comes from the top down, it's REALLY rare to see ownership get much blame when a team flames out. Coaches, GMs, star players (especially old ones), goalies (especially young ones) all take withering fire of varying accuracy, but only a few designated villains among the ownership group ever catch any real flak.

Patrick Kane has now cost the Rangers this year's 2nd (to Chicago) and 3rd (to Arizona) round picks. They now have picks in only these rounds this year: 1, 3, 6, 6

Here are the referees and linesmen for the 2nd round.

The fact that L'Ecuyer makes it as a standby speaks volumes. You only need 14 competent refs to make the full pool and you can't even manage that without including obvious dolts. Congrats.

Among the list of officials that were eliminated were the pair of Charron and Brenk who called Canes/Isles game 2. Linesman Travis Gawryletz was also cut. Maybe the uncalled high stick by Marty on Mayfield wasn’t viewed well by the league.

Ahh...Charron and Brenk, facilitators of a game where the PPs were 6-0 Carolina vs. the Islanders. That right there will immediately get you booted from the rest of the playoffs, complete lack of game management. :cautious::cautious::cautious::cautious::cautious::cautious::sneaky:

They got 2 more games after that; Leafs/Lightning game 3 and Devils/Rangers game 4.

Ok, so not immediately (that would be hard, they were already scheduled), but it definitely is going to make you targets to not advance past round 1.

Most of those refs moving on the round 2 are the usual vet guys who are likely to drive every coach, player, and fan crazy at some point in the next round.
