2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Joe Haggerty, who covers the Bruins for Boston Hockey Now (whatever that is), says signs are pointing to David Krecji signing a 1 year deal with the Bruins. He played in Czechia last year. He only had 8 goals, but 36 assists in 51 games for the Bruins in 2020-21.
Wow. I mean, Krecji was still very effective when he left the Bruins, but still ... wow. Two 36 year old centers.

I mean ... OK. Matt Murray still coasting on that year and a half heater he went on back in 2015-17 gets handed the keys to yet another Cup contender. Sure. What could go wrong? And, for a cap crunched team like Toronto it seems important to point out that Murray hasn't played more that 50 games in an NHL regular season ... in his ENTIRE career. He played exactly 50 once, and managed 49 on two other occasions. Otherwise, injuries, platooning or just plain sucking have conspired to limit his starts.

If there is one thing Dubas can point to as a positive ... at least Murray is a proven playoff goalie. He's always been decent in the post season.
The Leafs generally outscore their below level goaltending and cruise to a playoff spot. Then they fail to score enough goals in elimination games in the playoffs.

I don't think Murray will be a problem, he is capable enough to get them to the playoffs, then it will be on the offense again in the playoffs. I will be more interested to see who Leafs the backup is now that Murray is the current 1A. That backup will be important.

Yeah, by carrying a $4 million + hit on Murray, they pretty much killed the chance of platooning two cheap guys. THAT's the issue more than the player. I actually like Murray if they can score their way into the playoffs, and they more than likely can do just that. The trick will be limiting his exposure and getting him to Spring with a functioning body.

Flyers put Oscar Lindblom on waivers for purposes of buying him out. He has 1 year left on a 3 year/$9 million contract, but a $4 million actual. He had 12 goals, 14 assists in 79 games last season.

Janne Kuokkenen was bought out today ($325k cost each of next 2 seasons, $200k then $325k cap hits to the Devils)

The Devils save $1.3 million in actual cash and free up $1.625 million in cap space this season (add $325k cap hit next season). That should free up the cash and cap space they need to comfortably overpay Nino Niederreiter tomorrow (along with anyone else they scoop up).

Murray becomes a huge problem if that injury history shows up early and often...is there enough cap space left now for the Leafs to bring in a guy Like Ilya Samsonov as a backup that can play 35-40 games? Unproven guys like Eric Comrie or Kevin Lankinen would be risky and some of those old dinosaurs like Halak and Holtby would be even scarier from a reliability standpoint if Murray goes down again to injury. Dubas should not have made that Murray deal without Ottawa eating half...that would have have left enough money to go get a 1B. Seriously, how many teams were really ringing the phone off the hook to trade for Matt Murray...besides Buffalo!!!

NJD need an entire second line ... and probably have the money to just go buy one. They only have three long term contracts plus whatever they end up doing with Bratt. Will it work? I mean, not likely and their goaltending still sucks. But sure, go ahead and give it a shot.

One of my Devils fan friends says they’re grabbing Trocheck.

Funny how Trocheck, who is a perfectly useful if smallish and kind of basic 2C, is suddenly the answer to everybody's problems now that he's a free agent. He's 100% the kind of guy that gets over-paid on the free agent market every July.
Just like Darcy Kuemper and Jack Campbell suddenly are Patrick Roy and Marty Brodeur!!! They always said UFA signing day is as nutty as the league ever gets.

The only day that comes close is trade deadline day, when contenders and pretenders alike overpay.

Cam Talbot traded from the Wild to the Murray-less Ottawa Senators for Filip Gustavsson. Talbot is 35 and had a decent year last year with the Wild.
