2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

10 mill for him or even 9 has to wreck their cap situation. Hughes, Bratt, future Hughes, Dougie… hard to build much depth when you start piling up 9s.
And again, expecting to get a guy coming off a $10 million check for a season where he potted 40 goals to sign for some discount rate because of loyalty to a team he's played 30-ish games for was an absolute fever dream.

The 2 week ordinary course buyout window is now open until June 30th. That is not really relevant for the Canes but some teams will have some interesting decisions to make as they try to either trade away players they don't want OR execute a buyout instead.

Canucks bought out Oliver Ekman-Larsson. He had 4 more years at $8.25 million left. Because the Coyotes retained salary in the trade, they have dead cap too, but very small.

This is the Canucks hit.

SEASONCOSTCAP HIT
2023-24$2,126,667$146,667

2029-30$2,126,667$2,126,667

This is the Yotes hit.

2030-31$290,000$290,000

Not pretty but better than 4 more years at that cap hit.
Even worse, the Yotes lose 1 of their 3 retained salary slots for the next 8 years. And this forces them to find some other way to get to the floor, they had been retaining $990k, they’re losing a couple hundred thousand each year.

My heart breaks for them, it truly does

I love it when people call the failure of any kind of plan laziness. It's ... what's the word? Oh yeah ... lazy writing. Look, criticize the direction of the team, or individual decisions or even the whole scheme, but stop saying people are lazy when you simply don't like the results. It's infantile.

And this sentence ... woof ... "Actual work would be necessary to change the course of the franchise. And, we know the deep–pocketed barons that run the Leafs would rather spend the warm–weather months around the pool." Howie Berger really got 'em with that one. Pandering to a pissed off audience with nonsense, but ... ZING

Elliotte Friedman says that Travis Green is joining the Devils as an assistant, filling Andrew Brunette’s spot. Aside from coaching Team Canada in the 2022 Spengler Cup, he’s been on the sidelines since getting fired by Vancouver.

Yeah ... guys like Green and Dallas Eakins will eventually find their correct level. NHL Assistant or AHL Head Coach in both cases. And then 10 years from now somebody will forget just how terrible they were as NHL coaches and hire them. It is the way

The Coyotes have placed forward Zach Kassian and dman Patrik Nemeth on unconditional waivers for purposes of a buyout. They’ll coast a combined $1.833 million this year and $1.933 million next year. They’re also going to have another $21.4 million in dead cap for the carcasses of Jakub Voracek, Shea Weber and Bryan Little next year.

Habs sign Sean Monahan to a 1 year extension, $1.985 million. He finished the last year of a 7 year contract signed with Calgary that had a $6.375 million AAV.

At that number that is nice keep for the Habs. If he plays well and looks healthy, Monahan would have a whole lot of trade value with a cap hit that low. If he is too injured to play well, the Habs risked very little. Smart.

They still have retained salary on Ekman-Larsson too. At least Voracek and Little finally fall off of their tab after this coming season. They'll still carry a paper cutout of Shea Weber until 25-26. Shame upon shame upon shame, this stupid franchise.

Yeah, that's good business. Aside from this last year, Monahan has been pretty sturdy and he's finally on a wage that matches his on ice value. Should be moveable at the deadline.

Yeah and the retained salary/cap hit for Ekman-Larsson was reduced dramatically and extended another 4 years because of the buyout. The cap hit is only $20k in 2023-24, then $320k, 2 years at $650k and the last 4 years at $290k.

And since that was an actual check their rich on paper owner had to actually sign, I'm sure they're thrilled to be paying less for the same nothing. Next they'll make that ridiculous Liquid Death canned water the official beverage of the franchise.

Same with Barrasso and Vernon. They’ve both been retired longer than Turgeon.

The Hall is at time’s turning into the really good club more than the really great club…carry on I guess, Alex Mogilny says hi!
