All young goalies are generally crapshoots.

There was no fanfare about Yaniv Perets when he was younger and he was never drafted by anyone. Goalies on really good NCAA teams can put up some epically awesome numbers (Jack LaFontaine 20-21 1.79 GAA .934 Sv%). It's impossible to say if they will be successful pros.

Given the Canes really have no one in the pipeline behind Kochetkov that could be considered a more than likely NHL goaltender at this stage, taking a very low risk flier on Perets seems like a smart thing to do. We don't even need to spend a draft pick, the only capital invested is the $225k the kid gets paid in the minors and as a signing bonus. The only question will be if Perets ends up our #4 or #5 next season and where he will be playing next year.
He was eligible for the 2018 draft. He wasn’t listed among the 38 North American goalies on the final Central Scouting list. But Jacob Kucharski was.

One more thing...he didn’t sign an ATO with Chicago, so he’s not playing or practicing anywhere until training camp.

Freddie could learn something from just that picture. Freddie's stick is NEVER in good position to help protect 5 hole. He should spend time watching footage of Shesterkin and how he protects against 5 hole goals with solid stick positioning. (I know that the kid wasn't really protecting 5 hole there, but seriously, Freddie sucks at protecting against 5 hole goals).

The Wolves signed Perets to an ATO. So he could see some action in the last few games.

If you’re looking for hockey and can’t wait until Monday, the Wolves v. Griffins game is on NHL Network at 6 tonight. They’re still alive for a playoff spot, 2 points behind Iowa with 2 to play.

Checkers now sit 1 point behind 4th place Rockford and 5th place Iowa. All teams play tomorrow (they don't play each other) Chicago has the tiebreakers against both teams. 3 teams for 2 spots, it all comes down to the final day.

Here are the scenarios

Hopefully they can pull this off and show Wolves management that they're "committed to winning."

Wolves win 5-4 in OT. They were down 4-2 with 10 minutes to go but a PP goal by MacEachern and an extra attached goal by Senyshyn with just under 2:30 left sent it to OT. Ponomarov won it 54 seconds into OT. Lajoie assisted on all 3 of those goals.

Iowa and Texas are tied after 1, Rockford leads Milwaukee 3-0 after 1. The Wolves need one of them to lose.

Milwaukee and Texas didn’t cooperate, losing to Rockford and Iowa, respectively. So the Wolves miss the playoffs. But they were 14 points out of the playoffs on February 4 and closed with a 9-1-2-0 record down the stretch.

You would think the Canes would have a handful of black aces from Chicago for the playoffs…Pyotr and Lajoie, maybe Rees, Suzuki and Ponomarev?
Those 5 at a minimum, but I’d bring up anyone on an NHL contract that has term. Especially the International guys, many of them haven’t gone through a full training camp. It’s not like there is a lot of practice during the playoffs, but any work they can get with the staff or Justin Williams has to be beneficial.

Wolves to close the season:

Apr 11 @Rockford L 6-3 Kochetkov with the loss. Lajoie, Dzingle, and Stromwall with the goals.
Apr 14 @Milwaukee W 5-4 (OT) Kochetkov with the win. Griffen Mendel, Joseph LaBate x2, Lagesson, and Stromwall with the goals.
Apr 15 Grand Rapids W 4-1 Sawchenko with the win. Lajoie, MacEachern, Stromwall and Josh Melnick with the goals.
Apr 16 Manitoba W 5-4 (OT) Kochetkov with the win. Griffin Mendel, Koivunen (first NA goal), Zach Senyshyn, MacEachern and Ponomarev with the goals.

Wolves fall one point short of 4th and 5th place and miss the playoffs. Chicago (the AHL franchise) throws a fit about the crappy Canes supplied prospects and claims they will have no NHL affiliate anymore. This leaves the Canes to find an AHL dance partner for next season, probably a shared franchise.

Malte Stromwall led the Wolves in points with 51
Vasily Ponomarev led the Wolves in goals with 24
Maxim Lajoie led the Wolves in assists with 34

Pyotr Kochetkov was 17-6-3 2.64 GAA .903 Sv%
Zachary Sawchenko was 17-18-3 3.10 GAA .895 Sv%

We will see who our affiliate is next season.

Oddly enough last week we did "Spring Break" vacation at the beach next door to the family who owns-a, the Springfield Thunderbirds. The woman was wearing a Whale hat and I ask if she still followed the Canes down here in NC. She said no, we follow the Thunderbirds. But said they like really like Holden Beach. She also said she was a bad owner in that she "thought" they were affiliated with the Blues and "thought" that they were in the playoffs. But she then said that her father was the "active" owner of the team. LOL
