Quebec won the QMJHL Championship and will play for the Memorial Cup. Seattle won the WHL, Peterborough leads the OHL final 3-2 over London. Kamloops is the host.

That buys Justin Robidas some very valuable Mem Cup experience. He's been fantastic in the Remparts run in the post season thus far, and looks very much like he's joining the big swing/big hit column for the amateur scouting department.

Peterborough won the OHL Championship so the Memorial Cup field is set. Quebec plays Kamloops on Friday, Seattle on Monday and Peterborough on Tuesday, all at 9 pm EDT. The NHL Network is filled with playoff-related programming, so they’re not showing the games live.

Peterborough is where I saw my only OHL games, I was on an audit there in 1986 and we went to a couple of games. There isn’t anything else to do there, the locals told us they watch the locks on the Otonabee River. I don’t remember who played for them, but looking back at the roster, that team was loaded. The only player I remember is Keith Gretzky and he was an opponent one of the games I saw.

Through May 22nd.

Justin Robidas C (5th Round 2021 QMJHL Val-D'Or/Quebec):

With Val-D'Or: 27 Games 14 Goals 28 Assists +10
With Quebec: 33 Games 11 Goals 25 Assists +12

QMJHL PLAYOFFS 18 Games 11 Goals 16 Assists +17 *** As noted, Quebec won the QMJHL championship and will advance to the Memorial Cup (so Robidas' season will continue).

Robidas, Orr and Montgomery have to be signed by June 1 or the Canes relinquish their rights. Robidas is a slam dunk but the others probably won’t be signed. Orr was traded from first place Gatineau to last place Acadie-Bathurst so the Gatineau management can’t have viewed him as essential to their playoff push. That can’t bode well for his professional prospects. Montgomery? He’s big and he’s a right shot dman but London had no room for him as an overage player so he finished in the USHL.

Quebec beat Seattle last night to clinch a spot in the Memorial Cup Final, with a meaningless game against Peterborough tonight.

Robidas’ contract includes a $10,500 juniors salary for next year. So the Canes could sent him back to Quebec if they can’t secure enough AHL spots. But the limit on overage players could come back to bite them and him if they have the same problem they had with Montgomery this year.

Kirill Slepets signed a 1 year/2 way extension with Amur. He split last season between the KHL and VHL, playing fought the same number of games in each league. Another Russian that will never see North America.

By some odd quirk, the Canes rights to Bruce Montgomery are extended to June 1, 2025. But where does he play? Somewhere on an AHL contract? Norfolk?

Interesting. The agreement the NHL has with needing to sign players in the 2 seasons after they are drafted is with the CHL. Montgomery's transfer to the USHL apparently messes with that rule.

No matter, I don't think he gets signed anyway. I don't know where he ends up playing next year. He gives me the vibe of a kid who ends up at a US college getting a degree.

Unless he goes to college in Canada, he can’t play hockey. His 84 OHL games make him ineligible to play in the NCAA.

If he wants to continue playing hockey, then Montgomery is prolly going to have to go the lower minor pro route. With his pedigree, he can likely get an ECHL contract. I'm not sure the Canes have anything more than a handshake deal with Norfolk and he's not under contract anyway, but ECHL teams like to have "drafted by" players on the roster. He could also go to Europe.

The affiliation agreement with Norfolk was only for 1 year, so that’s expired too. He’s probably going to have to go the Skyler Brind’Amour route and hook on as a free agent somewhere in the ECHL. Or maybe AHL Chicago, since they’re going to need players like him to fill out their roster.

Wherever he lands, the Canes have 2 more years to evaluate him.

Some bigger defensemen take a long time to get there, so having an extra couple of years might work out for everyone. I just hope he can find a competitive situation. That overage year in USHL couldn't have done him any favors in terms of developing.

Robidas had 0 Goals and 5 assists in the 4 games Quebec played on their way to the Memorial Cup win.

Removed from the list is
Robert Orr C (5th Round 2021 QMJHL Gatineau/Acadie-Bathurst)

As previously noted, the Canes had until June 1st to sign Orr or lose his rights. He will be draft eligible again (I doubt he will get drafted again). Justin Robidas was signed, so we will see where he ends up. If it's not the AHL then I will continue to track his stats wherever he lands.

Note that all of the following players are also on our reserve list, but due to their age/situations I don't bother to track them:

Oliwer Kaski (we will lose his rights on June 30th)
Joey Keane (who bolted to the KHL)
Tarmo Reunanen
Jesper Sellgren

Of the players on my prospect list, the Canes have until August 15th to sign Kevin Wall or we would lose his rights. Dominic Bokk will be an RFA. The Canes could keep his rights by tendering him a QO. I'm not sure if we will bother doing so or not.

As stated by Waddell, with the Canes seemingly planning to have no AHL affiliation in 23-24, we might see most/all of our Euro prospects who have signed contracts with the Canes all play in European pro leagues next season. So I would say we should expect:

Noel Gunler
Tuukka Tieksola
Ville Koivunen
Alexsi Heimosalmi
Anttoni Honka

To all play in Euro Pro leagues next season.

I assume that Vasili Ponomarev will be an exception and will be in North America somewhere (if not the Canes).

I will be interested to see what happens to Alexander Pashin. I would expect him to also play in North America next season and not end up back in Russia. But maybe he ends up in...Finland? Sweden?
