Unless he goes to college in Canada, he can’t play hockey. His 84 OHL games make him ineligible to play in the NCAA.Interesting. The agreement the NHL has with needing to sign players in the 2 seasons after they are drafted is with the CHL. Montgomery's transfer to the USHL apparently messes with that rule.
No matter, I don't think he gets signed anyway. I don't know where he ends up playing next year. He gives me the vibe of a kid who ends up at a US college getting a degree.
The affiliation agreement with Norfolk was only for 1 year, so that’s expired too. He’s probably going to have to go the Skyler Brind’Amour route and hook on as a free agent somewhere in the ECHL. Or maybe AHL Chicago, since they’re going to need players like him to fill out their roster. If he wants to continue playing hockey, then Montgomery is prolly going to have to go the lower minor pro route. With his pedigree, he can likely get an ECHL contract. I'm not sure the Canes have anything more than a handshake deal with Norfolk and he's not under contract anyway, but ECHL teams like to have "drafted by" players on the roster. He could also go to Europe.
