Removed from Prospect List:

Kevin Wall RW (6th round 2019 ?????????) - Not signed by Canes by August 15 deadline, is an NHL UFA.

I don't expect any NHL franchise will sign Kevin Wall. If he still wants to pursue professional hockey he might need to sign on with an ECHL or other minor pro team.
Latvia beckons.

Look, anybody who knows anything about how minor league programs are actually run would see that for what it is ... a Wolves PR statement. Whatever, as I've noted a million times, I think fans put WAY too much weight on what NHL teams actually get out of their AHL affiliates. It ain't nothing, but it's not the be all, end all either. Chicago is the wrong affiliate fit for any NHL team that wants to prioritize development ... which is basically all of them. So ... yeah. When there's push-back on your requests to play your own prospects over veteran minor leaguers? Yeah, that's a distraction any NHL club can do without.

It was one-sided and not well researched (asked 1 person their thoughts) - but it probably ain't too far from the truth either. Anyone who bothers to look can see Chicago changes affiliations more than my kid changes his undies. I also feel like even if the Canes told 180* story it really doesn't matter. We got a few great guys out of Chicago, Pytor won a Calder, and now we move on.

Yeah, the issue is the expectation from Chicago. It's not like their approach has worked long term with any of the other half a million NHL teams they've had broken affiliations with over the years. But a writer who supposedly knows the AHL should at some point take a breath and point out that Chicago's management is complaining about things that EVERY other NHL club would demand of them as their affiliate.

Bottom line ... the Wolves want to be an IHL team, but the IHL doesn't exist anymore.

Thread maintenance note ... I edited the title to add the 2023-24 season and reflect the lack of relationship with AHL Chicago. It didn't seem necessary to open a new thread for the 23-24 season.

The prospect tournament starts tonight in Florida, with the Canes playing The Panthers at 7. Walt Ruff has a preview including 2 late roster changes. Invitee Colton Smith was replaced by Tag Bertuzzi (son of Todd, cousin of Tyler) and Jamieson Rees was scratched while he recovers from offseason surgery. The team will be coached by Daniels and Gleason (which means he won’t be at the Vineyard 36 event tonight) joined by Jason Muzzatti and Peter Harrold.

There is no information on the Panthers website about streaming options. Their roster for the tournament includes Skyler Brind’Amour.

Bryce Montgomery signed with the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays. As he is not under contract yet to the Canes I will keep him on the prospect list even though he is playing in a North American pro league (same thing with Jacob Kucharski).

Canes beat the Panthers, 4-1. Goals from Fensore, Gunler, Robidas and Murray. Perets stopped all 12 shots against, Vondras stopped 9 of 10. Suzuki scored the only goal in the shootout, Vondras pitched a shutout.

Back at it against the Bolts tomorrow at 3.

Canes came back from 2-0 down with 3 goals in the 3rd but gave up a late goal for a 3-3 tie. Goals by Mendel, Suzuki and Robidas and then the Canes won in a 6 round shootout.

Canes beat the Preds 3-2 to finish 3-0 in the tournament. They also won all 3 shootouts. From everything I read, Suzuki and Ponomarov were the standouts. We saw some of Ponomarov in last year’s camp, well finally get to see a healthy Suzuki starting next week. And without an AHL team, I suspect they’ll get a long look in camp.

Suzuki looked really great on his breakaways today, and Ponyo has been solid since last year imho I do hope they get long looks during camp for this year.

Honestly, at 22 and with part of 3 AHL seasons under his belt, something is wrong if Suzuki isn't absolutely shredding at this kind of showcase. Same to a lesser degree with Ponomarev (age 21, 2 pro seasons).

On both shootout goals I saw and the regulation goals (both breakaways) Suzuki was silky smooth in front of the goalie with nice forehand/backhand scoring moves.

Didn't Suzuki have a Bryan Berard style eye injury that he's had to recover from?
