2022 NHL Playoffs Round Two Series Thread ... Canes vs Rangers

If Raanta keeps playing well I don’t see making a change. Unless you don’t think he can hold up for the rest of the playoffs.

I feel like that's a bold move for a goalie who hasn't skated in 5 weeks, and to pull a goalie who is playing very well.

Andersen finished the regular season with a .922 S% and a 2.17 GAA ; right now Raanta is posting a .933 S% (3rd in playoffs) and a 2.13 GAA (5th in playoffs). Unless RBA believes Freddie is going to elevate above his already Vezina-esque season numbers, Raanta is doing everything that we wanted Andersen to do. Let Andersen continue getting to 100% so he's there if he's needed.
I mean, until he's healthy then it's a moot point ... but Freddie is a better goaltender than Raanta and he's earned that crease with his play. You know how Roddy thinks. When he's actually ready to play, then he'll play. Until then, thank goodness Uncle Antti is here.

Freddie skated with goalie coach Paul Schonfelder today before the limited team practice.

That's good. I'm still thinking that Raanta is going to need to get them through this series, and then we'll see. That's another week and if they get past New York, the level of difficulty dials up several notches regardless of how the other Eastern series plays out.

BTW ... not sure where this series goes from Game 1. Gallant mostly got what he wanted tactically but they couldn't convert enough of their chances to make it hold up. Staal's line not only held their opposing number in check, they also generated a lot more in the offensive zone. Weirdly, the third line matchup ended up being his best and I really don't think you can count on Trocheck being that bad for an entire series. He can shift the matchups to get Zibanejad away from Staal in Game 3, but I'm guessing they might just come out with more of the same in Game 2 and try to force Carolina to grind it out down low again ... and maybe open up the guys wingers flying the zone a bit more to try for the odd breakway at the risk of giving up point shots. If they do that, look for them to test it out on the Smith/Cole unit. You don't wan't to let those other two D pairs get too comfortable once you've got them rushed into making quick passing decisions. His only other option is to open it up and try to force a track meet. If nothing else, that kind of game would probably yield more special teams action since you normally get more hooking/holding/obstructing calls in that kind of game. Still, it's probably less risky to just stick with the program and continue to push the zone defense high enough to take away the time and space for Carolina's D to shoot the puck. If nothing else, it's annoying and it takes a lot of energy to beat that system. And again, if they convert any one of a number of Grade A looks before Carolina ties the game and gets benefit from a tidal wave of momentum, then their scheme worked a charm.

A big story in this series may continue to be the health of Ryan Lindgren on the Rangers top pair. It's no secret he took a beating in the Pens series and missed some time and appeared to aggravate something again last night. He looks far from 100% and the Rangers next man up on defense is Patrick Nemeth who scares no one other than Ranger fans!!!

Yeah, I thought Lindgren held up pretty well the other night. Fox is having to cover some extra ground out there and that takes a bit of the edge off of his ability to lock pick your pressure though. That third pairing of Braun and young Schneider looked really, really solid to me. That kid emerging and getting Nemeth out of the lineup has made a huge difference to them. And Miller looks like a different dude, he's improved so much. Carolina has to get back to making those guys win board battles like they did in the 3rd period.

Any idea what the hold up is in posting the start times for the Thursday games? Both games are no longer "if necessary." It would seem that this would be another 7 pm start for us with a 930 pm start in Calgary.

TV. They largely set the start times and IIRC there's no obligation to set the scheduled times until like 2 days ahead of time.

It’s confirmed for a 7PM start.

A 'Boo!!!' to the Canes for making me jump through the 'StubHub' hoop to sell 1 of my 'additional' strips tickets for the Game 7 Boston Game and then the Game 2 Rangers game. Covid caused one of my daughters to miss Game 7 and my Wife to miss games 1 and 2 of the Rangers series. Stubhub works and I was able to sell the xtra ticket I suddenly had, but it would be more straightforward to just list the ticket through Ticketmaster like you normally can.

I get the idea of not making it easy for STMs to buy additional strips just to 'scalp' them, but with Covid running as hot as it was/is, all they really managed to do is make it harder to resell tickets you suddenly cannot use. STMs who elect to scalp extra strips were not going to be deterred by the 'you cannot list your additional strips for resale via CAM/Ticketmaster'. All the Canes accomplished was making the resale process harder for the rest of us who really want/intend to use all the tickets we bought before 'life/Covid' suddenly intervened.

I hear you, but as my wife and I also had to miss Game 7 of the BOS series and the first games of the NYR series due to COVID, I had zero difficulty selling the tickets to friends who wanted to go.

Not wild about Domi mixing it up after the final whistle yesterday. The Hurricanes haven't been that kind of team and I don't want it to start now. I expect Rod had a word with him. Dude needs to stay in his shoes and not take the bait. I know emotions are running high, but hold your ground and try not to lose your cool.

*Not so secretly hoping that Montreal makes an offer sheet to Necas*

I mean, Domi gave Lindgren a bog standard whack to the lower back after they'd been jawing and the dude went nuts. I get it, but c'mon. Talk about much ado about very little. If everybody who took a little shot to the back after a play ended up tussling, then these games would never end. Also, Lindgren had been doing the fake tough guy act all game. He earned his poke. Brindy laughed it off, and correctly so. Gallant lost his mind, but he's an idiot when it comes to that stuff ... same as when he was a player.

This has been hard to watch.

This team was good on the road the entire season. With 4 lines capable of scoring, we created matchup issues all over the place on the road. In the playoffs we have seen absolutely nothing remotely close to what we should be seeing. Our abilities just to complete passes are terrible. There is almost no danger at all from any lines. Our vaunted PK gives up at least one a game and our own PPs are incredibly predictable and easy to stop.

Even the games we won in this series we barely scraped by with almost no offense at all. You can't just lose every game on the road an expect to win 4 games at home every time. That leaves zero margin for error. We are lucky to not be down 3-1 in this series.

The team that played those 3 road games vs. Boston and the team playing this series vs. the Rangers looks nothing like the dominating 'best ever' Hurricanes squad that rolled through the regular season.

I don't know what the answer is, there might not be an answer. Sure seems like everyone has figured out both our PP and our PK and we are incapable of making adjustments. Our forecheck is ineffective, no one has the skill to bury chances, and no one is ever in position to get to a rebound. Pretty maddening.

It sure feels like we are down in this series, even though we are not. The team is definitely not giving anyone positive vibes about how the rest of this series goes. Is there ANYONE on this team capable of rallying the troops? Anyone on this team capable of changing the fortunes of our PP? Anyone on this team that can score on a breakaway, or execute a shot into a wide open net in the rare instances we see one? Is ANYONE willing to pay the price in front of the net?

Sure would be a good time for a Justin WIlliams like playoff hero to emerge and start to consistently produce.

This team has had a pretty strong tendency of getting in their own heads over the last couple of years. I think that's 100% happening on the road right now, and it's all mental. Last night was an absolute master class in knowing the right thing to do and thinking about it so long that the moment is gone by the time you pull the trigger. That's why so many passes were behind guys or in guys skates last night. The chances were there, the execution was not.
