2023-24 Canes Misc Thread

Agreed ... but you'll know when that's coming because the Canadian press will start working that idea WELL in advance. We got a little of that the first year Slavin won the thing, and we got a lot of articles in January and February talking about what a shame it was that defensemen never got a fair shake at the Lady Byng. Those guys are NOT subtle.
 
The Centennial Authority has scheduled a special board meeting for June 25 with the expectation that the Canes and Authority will finally sign the lease extension that was negotiated last year. The signed lease will allow the Authority to request authority from the State to issue bonds to finance $300 million in improvements. CAA ICON said that they expect that lead architect Gensler will have concept designs and phase I pricing ready in July or August. That work will start next summer.

And phase 1 pricing will be totally fucked beyond recognition in September.

It's my understanding that the Canes never considered combining the two roles in this round of hiring. From the minute Donny stepped down, it was always two hiring processes. I know that Tom Embry and Mike Forman are internal candidates for running the business side but don't sleep on Arena Authority Chair Phil Isley. He and Dundon have become really close and he's a very competent leader. That would be a huge coup in reality, even if the hockey press would yawn.

Also, note that sources are only indicating an internal hire for GM. Yorke and Tulsky are both internal, so I'm gonna wait to see who they actually name. Personally, I think either would be fine. Tulsky gets the recognition outside the franchise, but Yorke has done tremendous work here.

Give the GM job to both of them since they're all about collective decision making in that office anyway... Co-GM's would REALLY drive the hockey media world crazy, wouldn't they? 🤪

Honestly ... it would delight me if they did that, but just for petty personal reasons. Prolly better to go with the flow a bit and set up a chart that looks like the rest of the league. Then you can parse out responsibilities and pay however you want. That way you don't spend half your time. talking about how unconventional you are, which is kind of funny but distracting.

IIRC, the league requires 1 name as the GM. But it would be funny. Or…list Dundon as the GM.
 
Phase I of the development around the arena has been announced. It will include 200,000 square feet of entertainment and lifestyle retail, a 150 room hotel, 500 apartments, 150,000 square feet of office space and a 4,300 seat ballroom managed by Live Nation. Completion is targeted for 2030.
