2023-24 Canes Misc Thread

Yeah ... between Tulsky, Yorke, the coaching staff, and the dedicated data staff, the Hurricanes have an integrated approach to analytics. There only are a couple of other teams that make data as big a part of the basic process as Carolina does, although most teams have gotten very data driven in their scouting. But in most team setups, the old hockey men often override the data people which is why you get weirdness like the last couple of rosters Dubas had in Toronto. They spent more money on analytics than any team in the league, but key decisions still came down to people like Shanahan. That's why you get disconnects like the Devils having a huge analytics staff and still hiring guys like Ruff and Keene to coach their team. It's also why I don't really trust rumors about Yorke or Tulsky taking other jobs. Not to say they won't eventually move on, but there's more to it than basic NHL logic.

The comments section on that Athletic piece is a gem. You've got most of them arguing that something has to be wrong because Waddell left and at least one guy seeing Tulsky say he's leaving if he doesn't get the job despite the fact that he said exactly the opposite. Hockey fans man ... able to bend reality to their will upon demand. Also, utterly incapable of taking anything at face value if it's said by someone they don't trust for any number or nebulous reasons.

I think it’s pretty fair for sports fans to not take statements like that at face value. It happens constantly that a GM says they’re 100% behind the coach, or a player or staffer says something similar and then the next day they’re walking out the door.

So when Waddell or Tulsky say they make personnel decisions by committee ... what? We're just supposed to not believe them? Why? Because other teams do that too, whether fans want to admit it or not. Other owners have input as well, and yet Dundon is somehow meddling when he has input in how his team is operated? Almost no GM operates with sole discretion and yet fans constantly talk like they do. There's a difference between lip service and reality, and I'd wager most people who pay attention to these things can tell the difference.

I was referring to the comment about Tulsky saying he likes being in Carolina and is not leaving, or whatever the specifics were, and fans not trusting those types of statements. I thought that was clear based on the discussion in my post. I did not intend to make as broad a generalization as you took it to be.

OK ... but I would argue that if we just make up our own minds who to believe and require no real evidence other than some other person's behavior then we're just left assuming that our own opinion is correct all the time without challenge, regardless of evidence.

OK, complete change of topic: We're going to switch to a streaming service and am thinking about Hulu TV. It doesn't include Bally sports, but will the Canes be switching to another service anyway with all of Bally's financial woes and streaming problems? Any thoughts on a streaming service?

I'm counting on Ballys or somebody giving me a stand alone app-based product for road games by the fall, so I switched back to YouTube TV which is the streaming platform I like best. I know some folks who use Hulu for live TV and they seem happy enough. I know it's pretty cheap if you go with the live only option and don't bundle with the Hulu app.

We've been using Hulu Live TV for quite a few years now and am very happy with the content, sports or otherwise. I will say, however, that Hulu has the worst UI/UX. It's terrible to the point that if we were to start from scratch, I would choose Youtube TV over it.

We use DirecTV Stream. It’s fine. My guess is that with whatever you pick you’ll find all its zits pretty soon, but the grass is greener only until you find more zits. Just go with the one that has the best content per price for your needs and you’ll be fine. We had the Bally stand alone service last season. It had some hiccups but got better as the season went on. My main thing is just not to commit to anything on a long term contract because the contract only binds you but the provider can pretty much change anything they want (except the price), kinda like the airlines.

Massive fan of YouTube TV here. We switched to it about nine months ago and have found it very satisfying. We separately subscribed to Bally Sports+ (and have since dropped the subscription at the end of the Canes' regular season) and will do so separately next season once we see the various options for doing so.

Yeah ... I've been through a couple of streaming platforms and I really do prefer the ease of use and stability of YTTV. And I'll pay a little more for an interface that is easy and comfortable.

Darren Yorke's interview dropped in NYT/Athletic ... nothing out of the ordinary, really. He's as confident as Tulsky that pending business is being handled much the same as it always has been, just without Waddell's input. He also told Corey that he would be sticking around, regardless of the GM hire. To be blunt, since Yorke is the lead draft guy, he wouldn't be going anywhere new until after the draft even if he wanted to leave. Sounds like he's well underway with the coaching search for the Wolves. I'm sure they'd like that wrapped up before the draft so they don't have to put it on hold. That gives them about 3 weeks before pre-draft prep and free agency sucks all the air out of the room.

My only complaint with YouTube TV is no opportunity to ever get NHL Network as an add on channel. Spring time events like the Memorial Cup and World Championships has me missing that channel.

You’ve lost me. Sports figures regularly make statements they know are not true. Happens all the time. If Tulsky or Yorke had bad feelings about what’s happening and are looking for options elsewhere they probably wouldn’t say so publicly. They’d say what they said.

Which means you can’t just accept it as truth. It kind of means nothing. It’s what their role demands of them.

Which means we just don’t know. If we have an opinion fine, but unless one is privy to some additional information it’s just an uninformed opinion … ie speculation.

Which is all fine.

The guy does everything the right way! If you raised your kid to play the game modeled after one NHL guy, I would want it to be Slavin. The thing I marvel at the most about 74 is the respect he gets from opposing players even in the heat of the moment…almost every player respects the guy and you rarely ever see anyone slash, hack or cheap shot him because they know he plays the game as honest as it gets.

There are situations when it's obvious that lip service is being offered ... injuries, for example ... but in the case of specific people talking about stuff where you know the background, you CAN discern for yourself. This attitude that everybody is lying about or spinning everything all the time is pretty freaking cynical.
