2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

A good article at The Athletic about cut resistant gear. TJ Oshie helped found a company that helped develop cut-resistant fabrics to protect wrists and Achilles tendons. About a year ago, he asked them to work on a turtleneck to protect the neck. They developed one and it worked. He never wore one. But he just ordered 5 of them, one for him and the others for any teammates that want to try them.

Paul Stastny quietly called it a career, telling Pierre LeBrun in an interview that he and his family decided early in September that they were done. He didn’t make a formal announcement or post it on social media and had fielded calls in the summer but wanted to see how he felt. He’s not sure what’s next but definitely isn’t interested in coaching.

The Penguins are requiring players on the AHL and ECHL teams to wear neck and wrist protective equipment, according to an article at The Athletic. The article also says the Canes, Bruins and Caps have also started the process of providing optional neck protection, with the idea of bringing in as much gear from different manufacturers as possible to give the players options.

Nicklas Backstrom is stepping away from the Caps to focus on his health. He didn’t set a timetable for returning. He had hip resurfacing surgery in June 2022 and only played 39 games last season and 8 this season, recording just 1 assist this year. He cited his “ongoing injury situation” but didn’t specify whether it was his hip or something else.

The blowback on the aborted Evgeni Dadonov trade last year has hit the Sens. They’ll forfeit a first round pick in one of the next 3 drafts, their choice of which one. So they’ve been punished more severely than the team that covered up sex abuse for 10 years.

There is a Twitter hashtag that summarizes this pretty well.

Look. The Sens apparently kept a secret no trade/restricted movement clause in a drawer and didn't report it to the league or to the team to which they traded the player. They 100% deserve whatever punishment they get, because that's just basic BS. Should Chicago have gotten more punishment for the Kyle Beach mistreatment? Yes. Should somebody somewhere have figured out what happened at the 2018 World Juniors by now? Absolutely. But those things have nothing to do with Ottawa flouting contract rules. Anyone who wants to criticize the NHL on THIS point has plenty of ammo, since they "conveniently" didn't find all the facts until well after Ottawa's ownership change and the new regime's first draft this past summer. What kind of sleuthing did it require? Maybe two phone calls. At best.

If there was a secret clause then the punishment is light. But if it was part of the contract that was registered with the NHL office then the punishment is misguided.

And Elliotte Friedman Tweeted that Ottawa GM Pierre Dorian is being relieved of his duties.

There is exactly zero reason for ANY of this to have happened if the restricted movement clause was standard and included in the contract in the normal way ... right from jump street. Vegas obviously didn't know it existed or else they wouldn't have botched the trade to the Ducks and if we're making snap judgements between the actions of Vegas' very professional and well oiled front office and the dumpster fire that is the Sens front office, yeah. I know where my money is. Dorien got fired today, but OBVIOUSLY should have been gone years ago. And would have been in virtually any other organization.

Michael Andlauer, the new owner of the Senators, sold the 10% stake he had in the Canadiens for $250 million to the Molson family, who already owns a controlling stake. That translates into a $2.5 billion valuation for the Canadiens, which is a new record for a standalone NHL team.

The WHL is mandating neck guards effective on Friday. The OHL and Q already required them.
