2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

The ghost of Adam Fox hits the Flyers. They traded the rights to Cutter Gauthier to the Ducks for right shot dman Jamie Drysdale, the 6th overall pick in 2020, and a 2025 2nd rounder. Gauthier was the 5th overall pick in 2022 but indicated that he wouldn‘t sign with the Flyers. GM Danny Briere and President Keith Jones flew to Sweden during the World Juniors but Gauthier wouldn‘t meet with them. He had 2 goals, 10 assists for the US in the tournament and has 13 goals, 10 assists in 17 games for BC this season.

Adam Fox... Eric Lindros... it's karmic either way.

While the Canes were ... publicly at least ... quite gracious about the Fox situation, the Flyers were ... the Flyers. They felt the need to trot Jonesie out for the standard "if you don't want to be a Flyer then you're not Flyer material" nonsense and let Torts run down Gauthier in a presser. Petty, churlish stuff from one of the more petty organizations in the sport. Which is saying something.

That said, like the Canes did when offloading Fox, at least Philly got something for the kid. Drysdale may not be living up to his Top 10 draft position, but he's a useful right shot D on a team friendly contract who has over 100 NHL games under his belt at age 21. He's not physical, but he passes the puck well and can play in most situations. And they badly need D who can move the puck. Of course, they may have just given up their only prospect that could legitimately project as a No. 1 center to get him, so ...

The Torts quote about never heard of the guy tone was no class all the way! You’re team drafted the guy fourth overall…be better than that in your public comments.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the whole Gauthier thing may stem from the Flyers unwillingness to sign him after his college season last year, becuase they didn’t want his bonus overage to hit this year’s cap. He also says it had nothing to do with Torts.

Oh, I don't doubt it had nothing to do with Torts ... or very little, at least. Which makes it even dumber of him to feel the need to insult the kid.

Cutter Gauthier had the NCAA draft rules behind him like Fox did (and Blake Wheeler before him). Lindros just had his father.
Entitled babies. Play for the team that drafted you, it should be an honor to play for anyone in the NHL.

And when the team that drafts you has no intent or desire to sign players they drafted, what happens? Or is it always a 1 way street? The Canes drafted Robert Orr in 2021, Luke Martin and Brendan De Jong in 2017, Matt Filipe and Noah Carroll in 2016, Luke Stevens in 2015, Kyle Jenkins in 2014 and Brent Petersen in 2013 and chose not to sign any of them. Where is the honor in that?

Did we know that Canes legend Jay Harrison had a Ph.D? He’s a consulting psychologist to the NHLPA.

The PA and Mental Health Commission of Canada have launched a new leadership and education program to strengthen mental health knowledge and skills.

Cutter Gauthier had a bit of a rambling public statement on an official Ducks podcast and pretty much refused to be specific about his reasons for wanting out of the Flyers' organization. He did, however, throw cold water on the bonkers speculation that Kevin Hayes had somehow poisoned his relationship with the club and on rumors that he didn't want to play for Torts. He also talked about getting death threats from Flyers fans, which is ... just ... no. Whatever went down with the Flyers front office will eventually come out, but for now ... maybe we focus on something other than maligning his character?

The well adjusted Flyers fanbase has subjected Gauthier, his advisor and Hayes to death threats.
