2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

Rielly has been offered an in-person hearing. That means the suspension could be more than 5 games.
And whatever suspension he gets will be well-earned. Attacking a player because he hits the puck too hard into an empty net? Really?

Slapping it emphatically into the empty net was a richard move. Cross checking the guy in the face was NOT an appropriate reaction, however.

I said on the pod this week I was reminded of Hunter's hit on Turgeon for which he got 21 games.
Even the NHL can't allow retaliatory sticks to the head. I've seen some people trying to defend Reilly, but c'mon. At that point you're just wanting to allow combat sport levels of violence so maybe just go watch combat sports. It DOES illuminate the problem with the continued presence of fighting in hockey tough. It tricks some people into thinking the NHL is MMA on skates ... which is decidedly is not.

Another thing ... presuming that a "disrespectful" empty net goal is even a thing is a bit of a stretch for me. Is a wraparound empty netter disrespectful? Is a slapper OK if it's from 20 feet? 30 feet? What if you do one of those fancy between the legs things ... or an empty net Michigan? Who gets to decide, exactly?

Sore losers getting butthurt. And he needs to be given a minimum of 20 games. But he will only get 5.
20 games??? ...from this garage league? Jacob Trouba does that kinda shit at least 4-5 times a year to player's heads yet he is the poster boy for $5000 fines and slaps on the wrist! Get that Neanderthal George Parros away from everything to do with player safety and put a real employee in that position of power that looks at things in a totally different light.

Pretty much my thoughts. I've always been on record about wanting harsher punishments across the board for any and all hits to the head in this league but 20 games isn't in line with any sort of precedent Parros' DOPS has ever set. We've fairly consistently seen cross checks to the head after the play get fines to 2 games.

Since he’s been invited to a hearing, it’s probably at least 6.

It should be 20- this wasn't part of a scrum or even after an intense battle in play - it was well after an ENG goal in a game that was completely over. The league is a joke though and doesn't have the stones to do it.
That being said, best they can do is a $5,000 fine (cue the Pawnstars guy)

Yes, I'm aware of that. My post was about the suggestion it should be minimum 20.

The consistency is a massive issue with this league, as per usual.
Consistency? For all the worry about precedents and slippery slopes you see whenever there's a hearing, the only consistency seems to be that suspensions trend towards half what they'd be if anyone seriously wanted them to be a deterrent. 20 is overkill ... but 3-5 for that kind of dead puck stick assault to the head is underkill.

Yeah, I've already articulated I would like to see firm punishments for head hits. It seems they spin a wheel to me though. A play that gets a ton of attention like this will get the book thrown at them, we'll all go "oh okay, new precedent! good" and then Trouba will get his 50th fine for a two handed swing to someone's face.

I'm good if they throw the book at everybody who hits a guy in the head with a stick on anything other than an actual follow through ... especially if it's a two-hander. Forget the past, start somewhere ... and stick with it. If you sit 3 or 4 guys for significant suspensions it won't take long for the message to sink in. Of course, that would mean that the NHL would have to start valuing actual player safety more highly. So ... yeah. Not gonna happen under this leadership group. THAT's the precedent Bettman is looking to avoid.

The NHL is so laughable when it comes to the consistency of everything that I’m shocked the league isn’t in the same category as the WWE at times. From the player safety debacle to the ever changing goalie interference calls to the mind blowing inconsistency of their on ice officials it’s just a shit show overall. If the suspensions were harsh and most importantly consistent across the board the players would let it sink in quick and adjust. Guys like Trouba and Tom Wilson continue to do their thing because they know they have been let off the hook countless times and the penalties never fit the crime.

A new precedent needs to set then. Just because they’ve always handled it poorly is not a good excuse not to fix it starting now. It’s an obvious over the line non hockey violent attack because someone can’t control their temper and it’s encouraged by their coach who maybe should also be suspended.

I mean, sure, if you actually believe that this suspension will set a precedent they'll stick to, go for it. I do think it'll probably be one of the longest of the season. I think that's probably stuff of fairytales though. I don't believe there's any appetite by Parros to actually eliminate headshots.
