2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

LeBrun has an article at The Athletic from the NHL player tour. The topic? Fantasy football leagues in the locker rooms. The Canes rep on the tour was Jarvis and he said the commissioner was Bunting, which should tell you that there isn’t a lot of interest in the locker room if the new guy is running it. Some teams allow former players to stay in the pool, Getzlaf won the Ducks league and Thornton is still in the Sharks league.

The weed guys dropped the healthfood guys? We know what people prefer.
I mean, it's kinda funny; feel bad for the 181 folks though.

With people who've played fantasy for a long time, being commish is basically a punishment ... so, having it be the new guy kinda makes sense.

The article starts by noting that Trouba quit as the Rangers commish because it was too much of a pain.

I'm clearly a serious glutton for punishment. I've Commished a Fantasy Rotisserie Baseball league among former work colleagues & friends for 31 years now. Using the original Rotisserie rules updated with a few Golbenbock book rule updates, but we've stayed very old school.

When I started it, I had to type in NL stats from the USA Today newspaper every Wednesday into a home-built spreadsheet that produced team and league reports for everyone. The tech advanced in the early years through a few iterations of programs I wrote and using raw stats I downloaded from STATS Inc, but for the past 20 or so years the Sportsline, now CBS, platform does most of the work, so it's a lot easier now, but I'm still Commish and still hand-process weekly transaction bids.

Many of the same crowd is also in a fantasy football league also created in '93 and commished by one of the friends since it began, though I dropped the football side about 10 years ago.

I was treasurer of a rotisserie baseball league in the late 80’s/early 90s. I had to do the same with the USA Today stats. And it was long enough ago that we used Lotus 1-2-3, our league started before Excel was released.

LOL, twins! Our league week still goes from Wednesday-Tuesday because of the NL stats coming out through Tuesday's games in Wednesday's paper; I refuse to change it :giggle: . I used 123 as well as we were nearly all at Big Blue at the time.

Any interest out there in doing a Canes ForumIce fantasy hockey league over at https://fantasy.espn.com/hockey ? That's where I used to like to play when I did hockey.

I was in a fantasy hockey league for a time. I travel in-season to places where they don't know what hockey is and internet connections can be sketchy at best. I couldn't update nor follow what was happening for weeks at a time of the season. One of the other participants was a retired IBM stats geek who would spend hours every day researching, adjusting, and honing his team. Of course he won all the time and pretty much sucked all the fun right out of the pursuit...
On the other hand, I was winning at vacation in real life, so I bailed on fantasy sports.

I ran my college rotisserie league on Lotus 123 as well ... good times? IIRC I only updated stats once a week back then and that was actually fine with everyone. Try that today ... lol.

Michael Russo tweeted that Derek Stepan is shadowing Wild GM Bill Guerin and other staff and the plan is for him to work in some capacity soon.

So, only two players defended the phone search. Wordi is, several younger players felt violated by allowing coach to go through their unlocked phones. And those are the guys who anonymously went to Bissonette.

One of whom was the captain. Jenner should probably rip the C of his jersey, by defending Babcock, he lost the locker room.

Apparently the other guy who defended Babs was Gaudreau. Makes sense. Jenner basically wants to grow up to be that kind of crusty, ridiculous, old school coach and Johhny Hockey played for freaking Sutter for multiple years. And it also makes sense that the younger guys wanted no part of that nonsense.

You know what doesn't make sense? Hiring the jackass in the first place. Somebody go dig into THAT decision making process and get back to me. The rest of the story wrote itself.

The worst thing about this whole story?

Biz was right.
Fair ... although if I was a Columbus fan the worst thing about this story is that the GM still seems like a completely clueless dipstick and the owner doesn't see it at ALL
