2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Bedard's going #1 overall, there isn't much debate there. Especially if he has a great WJC & outplays Fantilli. I've maintained that if you have a big, natural center who, at 18 years old, is the best player in all of the NCAA, you need to take him into consideration that he might be right on Bedard's tail.

My opinion on Bedard is two-fold:

1- I don't think he's a center in the NHL, he's a winger. The Patrick Kane comparison is always apt for him and if he becomes a similar type of player, that's a great #1 overall pick. Kane's going to retire with 500 to 550 goals, ~1,500 points.

2- While he's a blast to watch, a lot of his highlights wouldn't work in the NHL. In fact, Sal posted a highlight reel of his a month or so ago and I think there's only one thing in the whole video that I could really see him do in the NHL. Everything else is junior shit. Doesn't mean anyone should worry about him, but the odds are that the player you see in Junior right now aren't going to be the player you see in the NHL.

And?
what has McDavid won?
What has Matthews won?
I hope bedard ends up with the Yotes

Legacy awards while being the two best players in hockey.

Since neither of them are the ones constructing the teams around them, I don't fault them for lack of team success.
CMD is a HOF`er right now if he retired

Lets see how many first all NHL teams Bedard makes , my bet is none .

Kane is a great comparison but he has a league MVP , scoring title , and 3 first all NHL awards

I dont think Bedard gets all that on his resume

I'd argue of the "young" faces of the NHL (McDavid, Makar, Matthews, possibly MacKinnon) are all locks for the HHOF. McDavid & Makar are probably the only ones that would be put in right now if their careers ended overnight.

I mean, Patrick Kane's not chopped liver at all. He's a HHOFer that'll get in on his first year of eligibility.

When his career's done, he's going to finish with 500 to 550 goals and ~1,500 points.

If Bedard becomes that? That's a hell of a player. And even if he doesn't become quite that, that's still an awesome player.

What was the stat from a couple of finals ago? Price was the first player with a double digit AAV whose team actually made it to the Cup finals?

There is some merit to it… obviously w cap expected to exceed $100M in short order will likely fall by the wayside

A rising cap is of no benefit if your giving it all back to the players

It simply comes down to 3 things

You have to draft and keep feeding the club with cheap ELCs when you have high salaries

You have to know when to walk away from a player and make hockey not sentimental decisions ...ie Gallagher

You cant have too many 3-5 mil players who dont produce and can be replaced , the big culprit of your mistakes ..ie Byron, Armia, Joel, Dvorak , etc

Probably why Tampa signed all their stars to a 9.5M AAV.

Kane was 145 pts on 58 games

Kane and CMD were incredible in the OHL

For me Bryan Fogarty had the greatest single season of any OHL`ER and he was a D

Too young to have seen Orr but BF was fucken awesome
And had some time to write some hits for CCR.
