2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Looks more like 4-6. A bunch of western dogs currently behind the Habs will play each other, thereby guaranteeing they accumulate points. Meanwhile, the Habs schedule is brutal.

That said, I figured we were in the 6-10 group before all those injuries took hold.

I'd take Jiricek before I'd take Cooley.

Jiricek was probably the second best player behind Bedard at the WJC.

No idea if I'd take either before Slafkovsky.

If I could re-draft, I’d take Cooley.
He may well end up being the best of the draft, but I'm not sure his season this year is so good that I'm ready to say he's better than Slaf. He's basically on par with Snuggerud this year. Sean Farrell is having a better season than Cooley. Of course he's a couple years older... but Cooley would have to be dominating for me to be putting him at #1.

Considering our need for a top pairing, potentially elite d-man, I don't think I'd hesitate to take Jiricek first overall with a redo.

And that's not withstanding whether Slafkovsky's going to be better or not than him. We just really need someone to be the #1 d-man.

Nemec was my pick for best player in the draft 5 years from now , but Jiricek was outstanding

The key is to have Panthers end up with 11th or 10th pick - increases Habs chances at Bedard by 3 and 3.5 percent.

Habs climbing from 6th to 4th only adds 2% to odds. A combination of Habs and Panthers is still needed for Bedard.

We need Washington or Detroit to step up, ideally both. I’m pessimistic, they both purged at the deadline and their recent form has been crap. Fla is pointlessly bumping along at .500 of late, but that’s enough to deprive the Habs of a 2nd set of ping pong balls for #1.

The bottom line is Habs have to nail these 2 picks , as I base it on neither pick moving up slots .

Great draft in the top 10-15 , excellent chance to nab 2 top 6 players

Also in the summer maybe start dealing some prospects for those Dach need a change of scenery types

I think if we win any more games this year they need to be against Florida. Ideally we’d win both. 🤞

FWIW - McGuire said last week, based on feedback from management, scouts and the scouting work he was doing for Sens in the last year everyone agrees, other than Bedard, this is a very “meh draft with not very much depth even in the 1st round”, which is why so many GMs had no issue giving away picks.

I disagree , this draft is way deeper than last year past 5

Teams gave away mostly lottery protected future picks and many were desperate for help

I think I found one they need to target. Has had injuries and fell behind the pack. I think he could be a good reclamation project.

Alex Turcotte.

Funny, I think we hear that every year . . . like every year.
