2023 Draft and UFA Thread

4th Hab picked that year...better than all three picked higher x 1000 (McCarron, DeLaRose, Fucale)
The best Hab drafted out of 7 top-60 picks from 2012 & 2013 drafts and the only one that established a lasting NHL career

Seriously, not enough people play hockey, plus they get drafted very young, so the average NHL draft class is pretty crap with the odd lucky pick here and there. But the league wants more teams while the amateur pool stays stagnant

Lehkonen is pretty much the best pick the Habs made between Gallagher and Caufield (maybe the only good one), not counting the one they traded right away (Sergachev).

The Athletic’s latest draft ranking:

Tier 1: Bedard comparable Pastrnak

Tier 2: Michkov comparable Kucherov & Fantilli comparable Toews

Tier 4: Carlsson comparable Rantanen

Then drops to Tier 6 starting with Danielson @ 5OA
The last time the Habs had a top pick he had Zadina at 3, kk at 4.

I don't think it's a question of participation rate. There are more people who play basketball worldwide than hockey, but the NBA draft is a complete shitshow compared to the NHL. It's not a coincidence it's only two rounds. Part of it is the scarcity of jobs available in the NBA, and another part of it is players in the NBA just need to be a certain size to be even considered. Human beings that aren't 6 foot tall are disqualified by default, unless you're an all-time talented point guard like Chris Paul. Not to mention the NBA has such a significantly higher rate of serious injuries because the players are, well, literal giants.

One of the benefits that the NBA has in their draft is the vast majority of the eligible players are in the NCAA, with the odd exceptions here & there in Europe.

Take the first eight players drafted last season in the NHL in comparison: Slaf (Finnish league), Nemac (Slovakia), Cooley (USNP), Wright (OHL), Gauthier (USNP), Jiricek (Czech), Korchinski (WHL), Kasper (Sweden). Eight different players in 7 different leagues with different levels of competition, rule sets, styles of play, ice rink surfaces, schedules... Not to mention none of them played head to head in international competitions.

Beyond an educated guess, how is anyone supposed to know who of the bunch is going to be better? One of the reasons I don't watch prospects beyond work keeping me busy is how frustrating it is to have to guess so damn often.

I'm of the belief that the draft should be abolished, but if we're going to keep the draft, we should be drafting players who are 19 years old, possibly even 20 years old.

It's also why I will stand by those who are more often right than not when it comes identifying players.

Need a stud LHD and a top line center. Sounds familiar.

Also need to hammer down the goaltending.
