2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Did they shed salaries? They added and were up against the cap. They got assets for taking on salaries.

They did sell at the deadline last sesson but since then they have not.

Even at this deadline when clearly out of it they did not sell at the deadline. Only thing of note was getting a pick for salary retention. Dadonov trade was basically a wash.

Add: They added 6m in salary for monahan and added a first.

Add: They did shed a bit of salary for Matteson but also gave up a former first rounder. And got the better player.

Add : They got Dach for the 13th overall pick.
Sell: Traded Romanov for 13th overall.

If anything since the 2022 deadline the Habs have been buyers. Smart buys but still.

I feel this summer will be similar. Look for a Dach / Romanov deal. Look for a taking on short term salary for assets and improvement. Trading the 17th overall pick for a young player.
Probably should have said maximizing cap space, avoiding commitment and shedding space by riding out contracts. Weber/Dadonov was an example. It will be interesting what happens with Edmundston, Dvorak and Anderson, all have some value and don’t really fit long term. Hoffman, Armia are dead space, as is Gallagher to an extent.

2/3 of the roster has no fit moving forward

It was McPhee who was always a big fan of drafting Russians, McLellan not so much

He just drafted a Russian in the first last year. At probably the height of the anti Russia stuff. And he had cancer. And he was ranked in the late first. They took him at 20.

I wish the anti Russian thing could be used to the Habs advantage with that second pick but we will have to settle on using all our luck by getting Bedard

I still think the WHL's the second best league in the world, with the USHL creeping up right behind them, but the WHL doesn't pump out top-end players anymore.

Bedard's going to be one of the exceptions, but still, the WHL hasn't worked out for top end players. You can find plenty of depth players, though.

Half the first round is going to be from the whl this year.

Yup … it’s become the supplier of grinders to the NHL

Yup - USNTDP is going be the undisputed #1 within 10-years
Americans threw money at hockey, a lot of it, and boom, they got good. Up here, they still follow the same bullshit where players are streamed at 8 years old and it is very difficult to break out into the top echelons if you were not a top player in Initiation Hockey

It’s the same down here.. kids who’ll eventually be invited to nationals are pretty much being tracked by age 13 at the state level - obviously have the rare late blooming exception

It’s why I’m amused by parents who get all worked up if their kid doesn’t make the elite or A squads, makes little difference at the end of the day.

As for throwing $, I’ve met so many coaches & trainers who knew a handful of English words but came down here from Quebec, because they were offered $ for their progressive insight none of the teams in the Q wanted to listen to - the poaching from across CHL is quite extensive
