2023 Draft and UFA Thread

We don’t know anything.

Anyway, the draft…. I suspect it will be nearly impossible to move up from 5/6, but wondering about 17. Would be nice to get one of those defencemen.

Russia is being run by an ex-KGB operative. Nothing is off the table and Putin comes from a culture where the naked exercise of power just to remind everyone that you literally hold the discretion of life and death over people is and has always been a thing. I don’t think it had anything to do with the war, it’s a convenient cover. If I had to guess, and this is just a guess, I suspect they ran afoul with organized crime. Players as young as 15 or 16 are routinely extorted by gangsters, and maybe this episode went very, very badly.

This has been going on since Russian players started crossing the pond. Remember Mogilny in Buffalo? He was shaken down by the people who helped him defect. At the time the police said it was an “isolated event”. Nope.

(This is not unique to Russia or hockey. The shit that goes on with South American soccer players is probably worse.)

But "organized crime" in Russia operates only with the permission of Vladimir Putin. He is the ultimate Godfather and he says what goes or doesn't go. If Russian mobsters wanted to off a future hockey superstar's dad, you can be sure that they first got permission to do it from the boss.
 
Not really man. They operate in the shadows hoping Putin doesn't turn an eye to them.
