2023 Draft and UFA Thread

Of course Montreal media is now doing the dumbest thing and trying to push the narrative not to draft Michkov and would rather have a French player or big body. That’s exactly why this team will never have a 100 point player and hasn’t in forever. Too obsessed with language and size over actual game breaking talent
Jean-Charles Lavoie & PLD.

5. Montreal Canadiens: Matvei Michkov, RW, SKA St. Petersburg
That's my ideal scenario as well.

I'm at the point where I'm willing to take real risks in hopes of getting an elite talent.

Let's say Matthews doesn't want to stay in Toronto and we don't have any intention of selecting Michkov, I'd give up our two firsts & whatever combination of prospects Toronto wants to acquire him (on the condition that he re-signs here).

Maybe I'm just convincing myself of what I want... but to me it's more forgivable to take a chance on the Russian kid and it goes wrong than playing it "safe" and it goes wrong.

Like if you play it safe by taking Smith at 5 and he busts while MM becomes a star and is playing in the NHL at 21 or younger, you look like a fool. If you take Michkov and he ends up being stuck in Russia it would absolutely suck... but at least you swung for the fences.

So it was ok to draft AKos in 2003 trying for the home run and falling flat on their face vs Getzlaf, Perry, etc?

Playing it safe is a lot more understandable when you've already got the elite talent assembled on your team.

Until you've actually got that elite talent, though? You need to do everything in your power to get it.

It's different. We took him in spite of concerns about his health and work ethic. That turned out to be a bad choice. Michkov is ALL political.

It would have been great to get one of those other guys... but also could have just ended up with Hugh Jessiman, Robert Nilsson or Marc Antoine Pouliot.

Smith I'd be okay with because at least he is a centre but if they are not picking michkov they better not be picking a winger.

Ya. We can find okay talent in the middle of the first (where we will be picking next year). You almost never get elite talent outside the top 10.

If we're not taking Michkov at 5, and assuming he isn't taken before us, I'd strongly consider moving back a couple slots if we could get an extra second round pick.

For another 1st maybe, not a 2nd. Plus I don’t really like moving down unless you’re pretty sure to get the guy you wanted all along, otherwise just pick your guy.

Regardless, it’s extremely unlikely that both MM and Smith will be available at 5. Huge money on CBJ or SJ taking one of them.
