2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

FWIW, Friedman is reporting that Carolina is trying to make a move on John Gibson, which makes sense I guess since Anaheim is in sell cheap now made for no apparent reason. The Ducks would either have to retain some cash or take a contract in return (or both), since Gibson is at $6.4 million AAV and the Canes are a little shy of $2.4 mil in terms of open cap space. And FWIW, this is basically replacing Andersen with a more expensive, less injury prone version of Andersen ... at best. But honestly, given what I've seen from Kochetkov during this run at starter, I 100% do not trust him to start full time. So I do feel like they kind of have to do something in net.

That said, I think I'd rather spend the capital on a 2nd line center and hope Freddie can be decent when he gets back.

I admittedly have only seen him play once or twice this season, but Gibson's numbers are quite good. Among goalies with at least five games played, only Dostal and Vejmelka have better Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 than Gibson's 0.730. (He's tied for third with Hellebuyck.) By comparison, Koochie ranks 34th at 0.074.

I've said it before, but with Gibson it's all but impossible to judge just how much the tragic defending in front of him impacts his measurables. IMO you've just got to trust your scouting on that. My guess is that there's still a solid technical keeper hidden under that giant pile of trash. Over paid for what he is, sure ... but less of a risk than a lot of the other options.

BTW, kind of a big game against the Caps coming up on Friday 12/20. Washington is 3 points clear of the Canes with the same number of games played. The other two game before the Holiday break are against free-fallers so this one SHOULD have a circle on it.

Burns is not at practice today. Stillman is skating in his slot, so hopefully this is just a maintenance day.

We'll see. Burns has taken several heavy shots to the foot lately while blocking shots. It wouldn't shock me if he cracked/bruised something.

I would think just maintenance because if Burns was going to miss the game, it would be either Chatty or Walker with Slavin.

Edit: confirmed maintenance day

Cool ... and it wouldn't likely be Chatfield with Slavin. For some reason nobody seems to have noticed that Orlov/Chatfield has become the first pairing this season. They've led the D in ice time every game for more than a month now.

They have both played well. Chatfield is not afraid to jump up in the play but also chooses his times wisely. Orlov still has a brain fart from time to time.

I'm talking about ice time and usage. Orlov and Chatfield now get their primary assignment and also cover the 4th line so they're getting first pairing usage while everybody keeps listing Slavin and Burns first on the lineup cards.

For the season at even strength, Slavin is 17:54, Burns is 17:31, Orlov is 17:19, Chatfield is 16:27. On the PK, Slavin at 3:14, Burns 2:39, Orlov 2:14, Chatfield 2:01. For the month of December, it’s Slavin 18:22, Orlov 18:09, Burns 17:34, Chatfield 16:49. I don’t know how Chatfield is the equivalent of 2 fewer shifts than Orlov this month, it sure doesn’t seem that they’re separated very often at even strength.

They really only get separated after PKs when they split up the groups. Bottom line ... Gleason is using the Orlov/Chatfield pairing like a 1st pairing over the last month or so. I assume they're trying to further limit Burns' mileage, but also that pairing has just been more effective both in creating xGoals and limiting chances. Yeah, Orlov has the odd brain fart, but that's only a thing Canes fans talk about because they're used to watching Slavin who never has a freaking brain fart. THAT's the outlier, not the other way around. Slavin hasn't been quite as effective this season for what I assume are complicated reasons ... but at least partially from having to cover for Burns even more in the D zone as he loses a step.

Yeah. Ty Smith wasn't great the other night and Walker spent a ton of energy covering for him. Worst of all, he did nothing to help the power play and that's about all he has to offer anyway. If he's not helping on special teams, you may as well play Stillman who is more solid in the D zone.
