2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

RBA said after practice that Jost’s injury is more than a week to week thing and he’s getting a 2nd opinion. That’s…not good.
No, it really isn't ... although he's effectively the 13th forward so it's also not the end of days or anything. Still, Jost was finally starting to find his feet with the Canes when he got hurt.

The #Canes have placed goaltender Frederik Andersen on Injured Reserve and recalled defenseman Ty Smith from the @Chicago_Wolves.

Ok-did Freddie get dinged in that one practice, or is this just a move for cap space??? And why Smith???!

The move to IR frees up a roster spot, not cap space. PuckPedia needs to do a better job of updating their rosters though, they don’t show Jaaska or Tokarski on the active roster.

As for why Smith? I think Jeff nailed the answer.

RIP CapFriendly.

The two current public options for cap and roster info just don't have the staff to keep current with roster transactions, sadly. Eff you Ted Leonsis. Making me do math and remember things.

The Canes are practicing before they shuffle off to Buffalo. Both Andersen and Smith are on the ice, Kochetkov is not.

Jarvis - Aho - Roslovic
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Svechnikov - Staal - Martinook
Jaaska - Drury - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker
Smith

Andersen | Tokarski

Yeah, bummer that capwages and PuckPedia are not being kept up to date like capfriendly was.

After putting Freddie on IR and calling Ty Smith back up we have:

14 forwards: The 12 listed in the practice lines above and then Carrier and Jost (both hurt)

7 DMen

2 Goalies

Calling up Smith required someone to go on IR to get us to 23 roster spots.

I pinged PuckPedia on Twitter and asked them, with a little snark, why their site wasn’t up to date. The responded with a comment that those players have bounced up and down so frequently, and were down yesterday, so that’s what the roster reflects. It will be updated at 5 pm when rosters are official. Then some rando pointed out all the transactions, now of which are on PuckPedia’s site. So on days the team doesn’t practice, like yesterday, they’re banking a day of cap space. But doesn’t Tokarski have to clear waivers?

Tokarski cleared waivers once when he was signed, so he doesn't need to clear waivers again until he has played in 10 games or has been on the active roster for 30 days.

These up and down moves help the Canes bank cap room, but also, in the case of Tokarski, it also slows the 30 day on roster waivers clock by removing him from the active roster. That being the case, I have no idea how many times Tokarski has been removed and added to the Canes roster, so I don't know where his 30 day clock currently sits. For goalies, games only count if they play in them, and Tokarski has only played in 5 so far.

Ok...so I did calculate it. Since signing his NHL contract and clearing waivers, counting TODAY, Tokarski has been on the Canes active roster for officially 28 days. His first day on the Canes roster was December 4th, which is 42 days ago. He has been assigned to Chicago and recalled 12 times (12 times sent to Chicago, 12 times called up). Some of those assignments spanned more than 1 day depending on the Canes schedule.

So very very soon (a couple of more days on the roster) and the Canes will no longer be able to send Tokarski to the AHL without putting him on waivers again. Tokarski almost certainly would clear waivers if the Canes elect to do that when they have to. I'm assuming Freddie is still weeks away from playing in a game, so I guess look for the Canes to put Tokarski on waivers sometime in the coming days as they continue to grind out every cent of cap space. That transaction will look odd when it happens with Freddie likely still on IR, but we here will know why the Canes are doing that.

The '30 days on the roster' is also why Ty Smith had to be placed on waivers a few days ago. All of his up and downs even when we didn't need him to play were adding to that 30 day on the roster clock. He has been through that same up and down wringer (10 times this season).

Honestly, if and when Freddie is well enough to back up, I'd make up an injury to get Kochetkov a couple of weeks to sit out and reflect on his various sins ... and maybe to decide what kind of goalie he wants to be. The fun, wildman that the fans love or a guy who can help his team play winning hockey ... or something in between. A hangnail counts as an upper body injury? Right?

OK, but PuckPedia doesn’t show any of those daily transactions for Jaaska, Blake and Tokarski. The last action on their site for Jaaska was his recall on 1/5 and for Tokarski it was his recall on 12/4. And maybe it’s a lot of overhead to keep up with. But it’s still only accurate at 5 pm because of undisclosed transactions?

I don't know how PuckPedia sources their transactions or what transactions they decide to list, but you are correct, they clearly don't list all of the transactions anywhere. I guess they are claiming that at 5PM every day, their active rosters are accurate. But without listing all the transactions, you get the situation we have here where Tokarski and Jaaska and Blake just appear to be missing.

As of 5PM yesterday (January 13th), those three WERE missing from the Canes active roster, because all three of them were sent to Chicago on January 13th. Today they were all recalled (along with Ty Smith). So after 5PM today, all of them will show up again on the Canes the PuckPedia roster.

PuckPedia would eliminate that confusion by listing all of the roster moves every day somewhere and not relying on folks to use theahl.com to see all of them. Looking at theahl.com transaction list, it does appear the Canes are working this system harder than any other team in the league.
