Report: Fire Sale Imminent For Pittsburgh Penguins, Big Name Vets on the Block
The Penguins are open to trade anyone except Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Tomasino, and Pickering. Are big moves ahead before the NHL Trade Deadline?rg.org
Outside of the players cited as "untouchable" in the article--Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Tomasino, and Pickering--Rakell may be the only one on that roster that I think would be an interesting acquisition, especially if we can move KK. Rackell does, however, have an 8-team no trade clause.
But if PIT retains 40-50% of that, he would be a relatively inexpensive source of production. He's also only 31.Rakell is also packing 3 more seasons at a $5 million AAV. Pass.
Agreed that Miller would be a better--albeit much more expensive in terms of assets that we would have to give up for him--option. While Rackell has been playing wing for PIT, he has played center (which he did for at least some of his time in ANA), and Puckpedia even lists him as a center.J.T. Miller is also likely available if the Canucks can find a trade partner and convince JT to waive his full NMC (which all the rumblings seem to indicate he is willing to do). His contract situation is even more dire though. He is on season 2 of a 7 year deal with an AAV of $8 million. He also turns 32 in March, so his contract runs until he will be 37.
While Rakell would be a scoring upgrade, he is a winger. He also has an unusually high shooting percentage this season, which screams 'regression'. J.T. Miller is a legit center who would immediately plug right into the Canes 2nd line center spot. Miller is also ++ at the dot.
I don't like Miller's contract or his age, but he sure would fit a major need for the Canes. If KK went out as part of the trade (along with one of our top prospects not named Nikishin and probably a 1st round pick, at a minimum), the increased cap hit with JT Miller would likely be worth it.
I'll also add that there has been widespread reports of a potential Miller deal falling apart between VAN and NYR. It apparently did not get far enough along for Miller to be asked to waive his NTC.Agreed that Miller would be a better--albeit much more expensive in terms of assets that we would have to give up for him--option. While Rackell has been playing wing for PIT, he has played center (which he did for at least some of his time in ANA), and Puckpedia even lists him as a center.
I would probably make that trade if I was the Canes. Vancouver would have to retain though to make the cap numbers work? The Athletic had a nice piece on four potential trade destination places/packages for JT Miller and the Canes were one of those destinations. They had KK, Abramov, a first rounder and a second headed to Vancouver.
The other guy I like in that same role is Kadri…$7m per with four years left after this season and a left shot but still a gritty, disruptive type of center that would be a decent fit.I would probably make that trade if I was the Canes. Vancouver would have to retain though to make the cap numbers work?
II guess I would be worried about JT Miller's locker room presence. He seems pretty high strung and disruptive. Then again, is that him or a lack of fire from his Vancouver teammates?
I don't know exactly what the Canes long term plan is for all of this cap room they are going to have to play with next season. We need SOMEONE to be our 2C next season (and we sure could use an upgrade THIS season). That 2C doesn't appear to be in the system at the moment.
Only 31 points in 35 games this year, but over a point per game guy the last 3 seasons. Including 103 pts last season.I’m not up for letting 88 go. No sir. KK has to be in any deal to somewhere. ESPN is reporting the canes interest in Miller as well now
I mean Miller is a 31 point guy and is 31 and as much as I’d like another Arturs in Raleigh, How is that worth 88, Martin and a 2nd rounder.

So, all I needed to do was call him out & it lit the fire under him? Apologies for not doing it sooner. Who's next?Wondering when the Hurricanes are going to have KK arrested for stealing? Dude is a first class passenger. I keep waiting for him to become a factor and live up to the money he makes instead of just a sometimes contributor. I believe he's played a bit more physical and had a better year this season, but given his size, he ought to be creating space for himself and others a lot more often than he does. Yet, there is pulling fourth line duty. I need to get myself one of those apple polishing gigs. A KK hat trick?...over the course of a month maybe. *sharpens pitchfork*
