2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

RBA said Jaaska was ill. And he had no comment on reports that Morrow was recalled.

PP1 definitely could use a shakeup. Those heady early PPs where Ghost was zipping the puck all over the place and positioning himself for wide open looks are long gone. I don't have a problem with working Burns there for a while to see if he can't find a few better looks for PP1.

If anything is happening with Morrow, the Canes are slow playing it. He hasn't been officially recalled today as far as the AHL is concerned. That of course doesn't mean he is not traveling with the Canes as a 'just in case', but without any traveling press, no one is going to be able to report that.

I think PP1 is in the process of being shaken up simply because they've added Rantanen, but sadly they've only had one full practice since he's been here and the club is in the midst of a health crisis. So, maybe give it a minute or two.

Today's useless stat.

The NHL has tracked 'Missed shots' as a statistic starting with the 2005-06 season. Here are how the Canes as a team have placed in this category over the past 10 seasons:

2015-16 5th
2016-17 8th
2017-18 2nd
2018-19 2nd
2019-20 10th
2020-21 3rd
2021-22 1st
2022-23 1st
2023-24 1st
2024-25 1st

If you total up this season and the prior 3 seasons, the Canes have missed 723 shots more than the 2nd place team (Calgary)

Not that this is a surprising stat given the Canes approach to 'throw as many shots towards the net as possible', but the Canes dominance in this stat is reaching new highs. The Canes have set new records for total missed shots in each of the last 2 seasons. This season they are pace to again set a new high.

So as we watch the Canes and scream 'hit the net!', we are not wrong in thinking that no team misses the net more than the Canes. A consequence of no team taking as many shot attempts as we do of course, but still, it was an interesting stat to me.

That did lead me to also look to see if the Canes players individually dominate the 'Missed shots' category, especially over those last 4 seasons.

Missed shots by Canes player, full season rankings:

2021-22 - Svech 6th, Aho 13th, Trocheck 39th
2022-23 - Svech 16th, Burns 17th, Necas 20th
2023-24 - Burns 23rd, Guentzel 48th*, Skjei 57th, Aho 61st
2024-25 - Aho 7th, Rantanen 11th*, Necas 22nd*, Svech 34th, Burns 36th

The league's top stars are the individual players that dominate the missed shots category over those past 4 seasons, here are the top 10 players over those 4 seasons:

Auston Matthews
David Pasternak
Timo Meire
Filip Forsberg
Brady Tkchuck
Mikko Rantanen
Artemi Panarin
Alex Ovechkin
Vincent Trocheck
Matthew Tkchuck

(ok, so Trocheck kind of stands out here as someone who just misses a ton of shots).

The Canes as a team dominate the missed shots category as a total team effort, but not generally because of a specific players missing tons of shots (Rantanen will be a big contributor to this category if he elects to sign with the Canes).

Anyhow, your useless stat of the day.

I always tell and coach the kids on my sons team to shoot the puck as often as you can! I always remind them that you will always score 0% of the time when you don’t take a shot! I guess I need to highlight the fact that all those shots MUST hit the net! One interesting side stat not captured by the stuff CMal posted was how many of those successful shots the Canes made hit the goalie square in the chest!!! I bet they lead in that stat too…😀

Key take away ... good players miss the net a lot because they're shooting at the posts. Bad players get a lot of shots blocked. That's why the missed shots list always looks pretty close to the All Star Game rosters.

Hey, ringing the pipe is a missed shot and doesn't even count as a shot on goal* (*even though it beat the goaltender). If we're going to dig into useless stats, I'd be interested to know how many posts & crossbars Carolina has too.

One of the online nerds had that number sometime around Christmas. Carolina was in the top 5, but it was mostly good offensive teams in the mix ... same as with the missed shots. I think the Leafs or Oilers were first.

BizNasry joins the long list of people who claim the Canes won't be able to sign Rantanen, and wasted another trade for another big name player they can't sign. This has been the overwhelming consensus of everyone I've heard asked this question over the past week. Fron "they can't afford him", "they don't have cap space to sign him" to the old "Dundon is cheap" reason.

Given the fact that I’ve polished off my second Eagle rare Manhattan, screw Biz and his brethren. Frankly, the canes needed some firepower and time will tell if it works out. Either way, it makes sense. Onward canes!

If they don’t sign him it will be a colossal fail this time around…the Guentzel trade cost was not much of a hit, this time around it will leave a huge hole that you don’t just recover from easily. I’m not going to panic until July 1st comes around but they better not screw this up.
