2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

The Athletic had a nice piece on four potential trade destination places/packages for JT Miller and the Canes were one of those destinations.

They had KK, Artamonov, a first rounder and a second headed to the Canucks in a hypothetical package for Miller.
No on Aramonov.
That being said, Miller is taking in similar dollar to Svech, but has nearly 100 more points over the last 5 years, a similar +/-, and is about .25PPG over svech. The $8M doesn't scare me, the term maybe but the cap should continue to climb so is an $8M contact really going to be that bad in 5 more years? I don't think it's as scary as much as people worry about; not to mentioned the Lightning/Rags/etc continue to prove (almost every year) that someone will 100% eat your bad contract if you want out.
I'm not sold on Miller, but I think it's a lot more palatable than most.

I'm in the same place I've always been with Miller ... really, really good player but he's got to be in the mood. The question would be whether or not he can jive with Brind'Amour because his usual crap with sabotaging coaches when he gets tired of them won't fly around here. If you have ANY doubt about that, then skip it.

Fast, Raanta, E Staal and Stepan, and maybe others, all were teammates of Miller in NY. So I’d assume we have a decent read on whether he’d fit here personality-wise.

Canes lines and pairs at practice today before the flight to Long Island. Andersen had a maintenance day so Alves was in the other goal.

Svechnikov - Aho - Blake
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Jaaska - Drury - Roslovic

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker
Stillman

Jaaska has been solid enough, although he certainly doesn't have the same impact out there as Carrier. Shame Jost got hurt right when he had finally figured out the system

The Canes had planned on flying home after Saturday’s game but, as Tripp noted during the broadcast, they stayed in New York. They practiced today with Roslovic missing due to illness. But they lined up as they finished, with Hall on KKs line. FWIW, Andersen was listed first, presumably he was in the starter’s crease.

Rantanen - Aho - Blake
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Svechnikov
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Robinson - Jaaska - Stillman

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker

Fast, Carrier...those are important, strong character, bottom six guys you need come playoff time...sounds like Tulsky will have to add a player like that to his shopping list before March 7th. Thankfully there will be quite a few guys like that who would kill for a playoff run from non playoff teams that may welcome a trade here.

Yeah, I can see Carolina upgrading that 4th line before the deadline. I wouldn't be opposed to giving Suzuki a look-see in the meantime, because while Jaaska is game, he's just not a real center. There's always depth line playoff vets floating around at the deadline, so that shouldn't be hard to figure out. I can also see possibly upgrading the 7th D slot with somebody with more NHL experience. Again, there's always a bunch of that kind of player in play at the deadline, so there's plenty of opportunity there.

The real question is 2C, of course. Finding a rental for that spot would move KK down to the 4th unit and perhaps fix two issues at once. Carolina still has all of their higher end prospects and that 1st round pick so it's not like they don't have the ammo to make another relatively high profile move ... so long as they can figure out the Cap situation.

People on the internet keep banging on about goalies, but barring something weird happening I don't see that being a priority so long as 1A and 1B stay healthy. Gibson is probably the only actual upgrade on the market and the Ducks apparently want a 1st and a top prospect or an NHLer and I don't see Carolina going there for a guy who's not that much better than what they have. I think if the Canes take another swing in the trade market, it'll be for a center.

Gibson suffered an upper body injury in the first period of their game against Nashville on Saturday and didn’t return for the 2nd period. There is no word on the extent of it yet.

Caps extend goalie Logan Thompson, 6 years, $5.85 million AAV. He’s tied for 2nd in the league with a 2.09 GAA and is 3rd in Save % at .925.

A gamble, but probably not too big of one for the Caps. He's been quite solid for 3 seasons now despite being a late bloomer. They needed to get one of those goalies wrapped up and Thompson is less of a risk than Lindgren.

Lenovo Center related, not Canes related. The R&D Brewing stand outside section 322 has been rebranded as Carolina Brewing Company.
