2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

I have no issue with Rantanen electing to not sign here. Again my position is once he was traded away from Colorado, there really is little reason for him to sign with the Canes. The whole 'only Canes can give him 8 years' argument is only partially true (team can trade for his rights).

Now that he is no longer negotiating with Colorado to stay, if I'm Mikko Rantanen, I'm 100% going to UFA so I can pick the team I'm signing my next contract with. I would be stunned if Rantanen elects to just sign with the Canes before the trade deadline. The only risk Rantanen has here is a career ending injury between now and the end of the season.

I'm 100% good with Mikko Rantanen's position.

Sure the Canes seem likely to just treat this as a rental and do nothing before the deadline. I expect though that even if we decide we are not shopping Rantanen, we sure as heck are listening to offers from team like the LA Kings.

If I’m Rantanen, I’m poking around come Free Agency. I suspect he’s still a bit raw about the trade. Moreover, he has not really shown that he’s the $13.5 million man here, either. However, he’ll have to decide if he likes the cup contention relevance or if he wants a paycheck in a different market that is rebuilding.

Two things.

1. We keep talking like we’re a cup contender. We have not looked like a cup contender on the ice since before Thanksgiving.

2. People are acting like other teams are waiting to see if we’re willing to trade Rantanan before they make a move. I don’t think that’s the case. The canes aren’t going to post an ad on Facebook Marketplace. I’m sure they either are or are not taking calls on him (and others). And I expect other teams have made inquiries about it. This is all a huge unknown in the media because there’s probably nothing to know. Nobody from the Canes ever said they were intent on signing him before the deadline. (Of course they’d like to get him locked up but couldn’t have been expecting it. ). This so called disaster for the canes is a media and fans thing. The disaster is the product they’ve been putting on the ice.

The Canes this season have been operating with a lot of smoke and mirrors. We’re in the playoff mix and have been all season. Some injuries and wear and tear on older guys, and we are struggling to stay in contention. It’s the robust idea that all you need is an invite to the dance to be a cup contender— Cinderella or not.

However, I will go back to my thoughts going into this season and that’s that GMET tweaks to the roster this off season we never going to be enough. Not better on offense— just similar. Worse on defense and goal tending an ongoing weakness.

I would sell at the deadline if we can get something that helps out in the near future. If you can offload any of Burns/Orlov/Roslavic (non-core pieces) etc I'd be OK with it. The team isn't going any farther than the 1st or 2nd round this year unless the hockey gods decide to play a joke on the league.

I am kinda there too with ya, yeah it would certainly surprise many if they decided to go that route and sell off some ageing players, especially if they ride it out with Rantanen, but this team is simply nowhere good enough as it stands today to win a Cup. The real work is going to have to be done all summer...and having a few more assets or trade chips to add to the summer wheeling and dealing is not a bad thing. The Canes inconsistency since Thanksgiving trumps anything they showed in the first 20 games in terms of being a serious contender.

I think they’re only worse on D because of the difference in Burns. They’re a very similar team to last year. I think they’re just burned out on the idea of “Just work harder”.

I think they can sell and still make the playoffs. They're not going beyond the 1st round either way though.
We knew losing 2 of our top 4 DMen, and 2 of our top 6 F's (counting JG here) after last season was the start of a retooling, at least. Add to that that lose Orlov and Burns after this year. So IMO, we are in the midst of a 2-3 year retooling project where we are not really serious SCF contenders. So I would think about how to build this team to make a serious run in 2+ years when Morrow, Nikishin, Chatfield and Slavin are your top defenders, and Aho, Svetch, Jarvis, Blake, Nadeau and ? are your top F's. Love for 96 to be a part of that, too. But if "selling" him sets us up better for 26-27 and beyond then I would do that all day long. Same with Taylor Hall.

I agree that this is not the strongest team the Canes have iced over our current playoff run. However, losing in the first round of the playoffs potentially means either NJ or Columbus eliminates us despite us probably having home ice advantage.

Yeah, that could happen, but man that is being pretty defeatist isn't it?

They can't win 2 in a row right now, they're not winning a series without something changing.
They're 3-6 since February 1st, scoring a grand total of 21 goals - 12 of which came in 2 games (Buff/Utah). (1.7 goals per game)

Dumping Roslovic (not scoring), Burns (not scoring and flailing on defense), or Orlov (playing like Burns-light) and bringing up Morrow or Suzuki, or Nadeau IMHO doesn't make you worse. It may not make you a lot better immediately, but I'd give our playoff chances about the same odds.

Call it defeatist, but I call it being real about the expectations given their current level of play. I hope they get their collective heads out of their butts and start playing full 60 minute games, but that has happened a lot less often this year than it has happened.

Have you seen us play lately?😁

Don’t underestimate us, we’re very capable of losing to any team in the league.

We’re not going to make the playoffs if we finish out like we played in since Feb 1. 21 games left. Go 7-14 and we end up with 88 points.

Who can we move out and still make the playoffs? I think we need a center and a goalie to have a chance to go deep in the playoffs. I don’t know what kind of move there is for that.

You guys are starting to sound like my wife after every loss.

It's not like the teams behind us in the Metro are rolling and are poised to overtake us at any moment. We are in bad stretch, but we won 2 of the last 3 and the game we lost was a tight 1 goal game against a good team.

How spoiled have we become?
