2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Already heard several "experts" write the Canes right out of the playoffs already. Tulsky really did drop the ball. Days like this make you miss Waddell. Tulsky should have been selling today. This team took two steps back.
Those same experts were saying we were in good shape to make a deep run as anyone. I don’t know what team they were watching. So now a guy that had 2 goals and 6 assists in 40 days was the difference? I don’t buy it.

I think the miss was on how good MacKinnon actually is. Rantanan should probably give him a third of this money. Betting that Dallas will regret this contract. Maybe not this season but soon.

Rants owes Nate hookers and steak every day for life

Dallas will soon see a 70-80 point player making 12 mil a year is a bit rich

Why go 12 mil when you were bidding against yourselves

Let him test the market nobody was going 14 mil on a 7 year deal to match the money

Colorado dodged a bullet in not letting Carolina speak with Rants and by unloading him as they knew Makar and MacKinnon were the drivers on that team. I’ll take a GM willing to shoot for the stars any day. We lived through years of JR and RF going to the recycle bins and past their prime players only to end up maintaining the status quo.
One thing I do miss? JR always drafting a goalie— he was on to something 😉

I fully agree with this, but of course, Rantanen could, just out of spite now, break out now that he is 'happy again'.

We saw 13 games of Mikko Rantanen for the Canes. Based on what we saw, does anyone really think he is going to go back to being a 100 point player in Dallas playing with.... Mikael Granlund? Jaime Benn? Jason Robinson? Wyatt Johnson? Roope Hintz? Dallas has scored 11 more goals than the Canes this season (in 1 less game). Rantanen clearly didn't look like much of a difference maker out there in his 13 games with the Canes. Maybe an 80 point guy, but definitely not this dynamic 100+ point player that his salary now says he is.

I didn't expect to be a leading contender for the cup this season still don't. I do want to see what we will do this off-season.

Still glad we have a GM willing to swing for the fences. This time we lined out.
Others might prefer the guy that doesn't swing ever

I like it also. He’s also smart enough to get a return back on a miss so it’s doesn’t hurt the org long term. He learned from last year. As far as Dundon getting blamed…. Dude gave Rants exactly what he asked for and he turned it down because he decided he didn’t want to be in Raleigh. Dundon isn’t a mind reader and couldn’t negotiate a deal pre- trade like Dallas was able too, so how exactly is this his fault? Was he supposed to give him more than what he asked for especially since he was blending in so well with this team while he was here. This was the best possible outcome once we learned rants didn’t want to be here.

Plus GMET didn’t hide behind shit in his pc and explained exactly what they were thinking. A player like rants falls in your lap and he took a a chance and was able to save it at the end of the day.

Sarcasm?

JR did not draft a goaltender in 1997, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2013. The goaltenders he drafted who were not Cam Ward and played at least one NHL game:

Rob Zepp - played 10 NHL games with the Flyers.
Justin Peters - 68 games with the Canes as Ward's backup.
Mike Murphy - 2 games with the Canes
Frederik Andersen - Re-entered the draft because he didn't want to be Ward's backup, returned as a free agent so JR gets zero credit there.'

Not sure whether JR was still responsible for the 2014 draft or if Ron Francis can claim credit/blame for Nedeljkovic. Francis can be blamed for Eetu Makiniemi and Jack LaFontaine... 4 NHL games so far... probably ever, but then again they could always do what Rob Zepp did...

Waddell gave us Kochetkov... and any credit/blame for Anderson part deux probably also resides with him.

Don't get me started on the Whaler years. JR drafted Manny Legace, then traded him because of JS Giguere... who he also traded away. When you can point to Kay Whitmore and Peter Sidorkiewicz as the best goalies your franchise managed to actually develop in 17 NHL seasons in Hartford... it just shows that the goaltending issue has existed all the way back to the beginning, honestly. They traded for Mike Liut and Sean Burke. They signed Irbe and Andersen as free agents, and it's been a similar case for even the backups/platooners: Martin, Raanta, Mrazek, McIlhenny, Darling, Lack, Leighton, Khudobin, Ellis, Boucher, Grahame, Gerber, Storr, Desrochers, Weekes, Barrasso, Moss, Fichaud, Fitzpatrick, MacLean, Kidd, Muzzati, Reese, Pietrangelo... talk about a revolving door.

Really good podcast analysis about the Rantanen trade situation by Elliote Friedman, beginning around 13:45.

Good listen. Thanks for posting

Both new guys were at practice today. Andersen was listed first, so presumably he’ll get the start tomorrow. Stankoven will wear 22, Jankowski is 77.

Svechnikov - Aho - Stankoven
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Hall - Kotkaniemi - Blake
Robinson - Jost - Roslovic (Jankowski)

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker
Stillman
