One thing I do miss? JR always drafting a goalie— he was on to something
Sarcasm?
JR did not draft a goaltender in 1997, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2013. The goaltenders he drafted who were not Cam Ward and played at least one NHL game:
Rob Zepp - played 10 NHL games with the Flyers.
Justin Peters - 68 games with the Canes as Ward's backup.
Mike Murphy - 2 games with the Canes
Frederik Andersen - Re-entered the draft because he didn't want to be Ward's backup, returned as a free agent so JR gets zero credit there.'
Not sure whether JR was still responsible for the 2014 draft or if Ron Francis can claim credit/blame for Nedeljkovic. Francis
can be blamed for Eetu Makiniemi and Jack LaFontaine... 4 NHL games so far... probably ever, but then again they could always do what Rob Zepp did...
Waddell gave us Kochetkov... and any credit/blame for Anderson part deux probably also resides with him.
Don't get me started on the Whaler years. JR drafted Manny Legace, then traded him because of JS Giguere... who he also traded away. When you can point to Kay Whitmore and Peter Sidorkiewicz as the best goalies your franchise managed to actually develop in 17 NHL seasons in Hartford... it just shows that the goaltending issue has existed all the way back to the beginning, honestly. They traded for Mike Liut and Sean Burke. They signed Irbe and Andersen as free agents, and it's been a similar case for even the backups/platooners: Martin, Raanta, Mrazek, McIlhenny, Darling, Lack, Leighton, Khudobin, Ellis, Boucher, Grahame, Gerber, Storr, Desrochers, Weekes, Barrasso, Moss, Fichaud, Fitzpatrick, MacLean, Kidd, Muzzati, Reese, Pietrangelo... talk about a revolving door.
