2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

Official roster announcement for 4 Nations

Jaccob Slavin on Team USA, no surprise.
Seth Jarvis on Team Canada, mild surprise

Since the Selke is effectively a cumulative award that must be jump started with a momentum year and followed up with a couple of seasons to build a voter base ... Jarvis might actually get a shot at it in 2026 or so. But yeah, the people who decide such things have decided he's a great defensive forward. Don't get me wrong. I think he's a very responsible 200 foot player who is dynamic on the forecheck. I just don't think there's anything particularly special about his defensive game per se. That said, Tavaras is Swiss cheese in his own end, so ... yeah. If it came down to those two and you needed a guy who could play a checking role on the wing then that's a no brainer. You take Jarvy 100 out of 100 times in that scenario.

No changes at practice today before they head to Long Island. With a 5 pm start tomorrow, I doubt they have a morning skate.

Svechnikov - Aho - Roslovic
Robinson - Drury - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Carrier - Kotkaniemi - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker
Stillman

Kochetkov | Tokarski

Seravalli tweeted that he’s hearing the Canes are placing Brendan Lemieux on waivers for mutual contract termination. Re-signing him before the end of the season seemed like an odd move to me. Maybe he and Waddell envisioned him spending the year as the 13th forward again but the re-affiliation with the Wolves, signing the college kids and then Jost in free agency pushed him farther down the pecking order. And he’s only played 12 games for the Wolves.

Probably heading to Russia, I'm hearing. His buddy DeAngelo seems to be enjoying himself over there, after all.

That also opens up another roster spot if needed down the road for the Canes.

The biggest deal with getting Lemieux off the books is getting that $750K slot open in Chicago. He was getting paid AHL top 6 money to get healthy scratched. That's not good for anyone involved.

It's a smart business move, but I still can't help but feel sorry for Lemieux. He was a standup guy on the team and had only good things to say about the organization. That may change now, of course - but it gives him a chance to play elsewhere.

I think this is what he wanted. He isn't the 1st call up for the Canes unless they specifically need a tough guy (Suzuki has been playing great) and he wants to be a 12/13th forward somewhere.

Lemieux just got passed by other players on the depth chart. I like the guy, liked his attitude when he was our 13th forward last season, liked his effort and results when he was on the ice. I wish him well wherever he lands.

Yeah, there's one dude I saw online who claims to know Lemieux and he said that Brendan requested this move so he could go play somewhere. Of course, that guy also says that "somewhere" is the KHL, so ... we'll see. Wouldn't shock me actually. I think he's just too slow for the modern game and not big enough to make the tough guy stuff pay off.

The “somewhere” is HC Davos in the Swiss League. He signed a contract for the rest of this season and the next 2.

Cool. Weird fit though. The Swiss league is the least physical of the Euro pro leagues. I'd have thought Lemieux would have been attracted to someplace where he could apply a little argy bargy ... seeing as that's the only thing he does well. Still, I'd rather live in Switzerland than freaking Russia.

New lines at practice.

Necas - Aho - Jarvis
Robinson - Drury - Blake
Martinook - Staal - Svech
Carrier - KK - Roslovic
