The Sunday game was straight out of the Bill Peters handbook. The Wolves outshot the Admirals 41-16 but couldn’t finish. Magnus Chrona, the goalie they got from San Jose in the Askarov trade was a monster. He‘s having a great season so far, 1.40/.953 in 5 games. He was 3.49/.894 in 31 games last year.

Chicago Wolves Last week:

Nov 15 @Grand Rapids L 5-1 Khazheyev with the loss. Nadeau with the goal
Nov 16 Manitoba L 5-3 Khazheyev with the loss. Slavin, Jaaska and Nadeau the goals.
Nov 17 Rockford W 4-0 Dustin Tokarski with the 29 save shutout. Seeley, Gunler, Brind'Amour and Heimosalmi with the goals.

Chicago is 4-7-1 so far, 6th in the 7 team AHL Central Division. Just 22 goals for and 36 Goals allowed. I'm sure that is making the owner of the Wolves very upset.

Ryan Suzuki leads the team in points, 1 Goal and 8 Assists in 12 games.
Bradley Nadeau now leads the team in goals with 3.
Ruslan Khazheyev is 1-4 3.26 GAA .863 Sv%.
Yanev Perets is 1-2 3.67 GAA .825 Sv%.

Given that Spencer Martin might not be returning to Chicago this season, I expect that Dustin Tokarski is going to become the #1A with either Perets or Khazheyev getting shipped out to the ECHL somewhere. They also could loan Khazheyev out somewhere overseas, I suspect he could find playing time with some VHL team somewhere.

2 Games this week both @Manitoba (Thr and Sat)

Quick tidbit on Artamonov, Cory Lav pointed to him as the Canes fastest rising prospect and mentioned he was one of a very small handful of guys that could be the steal of that particular draft! A just turned 19 year old that is second in the KHL in goals so far this year…me likey.

Justin Poirier led the QMJHL in goals last season as well by 6 over 2nd place (51 goals in 68 games). He followed that up with 18 goals in 17 playoff games.

Small and not extremely fast is why he fell to the 5th round. It was surprising however that he fell all the way to round 5. He is the perfect Canes long shot that we love to draft. High end skill and goal scoring ability, with multiple concerns in other areas.

Hey ... of all the clipboard skill categories at draft time, the one you've got a legit shot at significantly improving is skating. Guys mature into whatever body they mature into, but almost everybody can improve their skating. It's just a matter of how much. And rounds 4-6 are the perfect time to mess around with skilled but flawed guys.

Jackson Blake, 4th round pick
Jaccob Slavin, 4th round pick.
Nicolas Roy, 4th round pick (but producing for another team)

In Today's 'whatever happen to that Canes prospect?' we take a look at the Canes 2017 2nd round pick, #52 overall (via Pittsburgh in the Ron Hainsey trade). Luke Martin.

If you remember Luke Martin from the prospect tracker posts, the Canes drafted him after his freshman season at Michigan, where he posted 1 Goal and 7 assists. That 1 goal ended being a season high he repeated at Michigan 2 more times. He failed to score a goal his Junior year. He ended his 4 year Michigan run with 3 goals and 27 assists in 139 games.

Martin was unsigned by the Canes after his Senior season at Michigan and became a hockey UFA. He signed with ECHL Greenville in 2020 and ended up playing 11 games there (without a point) and 6 games with AHL Texas (also without a point). He was a combined -9 in those 17 games.

Martin then proceeded to break out offensively. In the 21-22 season, Martin had 10 Goals and 33 Assists in 59 games with ECHL Utah (6 pointless games with AHL Colorado that season). Those 43 points were 13 more than Martin had his previous 5 seasons combined.

He followed that up in 22-23 with 10 goals and 21 assists in just 31 games with ECHL Utah and Jacksonville. He ended the season playing 28 games for AHL Colorado where he posted 1 Goal and 9 Assists in 28 games.

The last 2 seasons Luke Martin has been playing in Finland for Liiga HIFK Helsinki. In 23-24 he had 10 goals and 37 assists in 56 games. His 47 points were the best by any Liiga Dman (his 37 assists were tied for 7th overall). He is off to a similar hot start this season with 6 Goals and 13 Assists in 23 games.

He is 26 years old now and likely will never end up getting an NHL shot, but after a 4 year career at Michigan where he generated almost no offense at all, he eventually has developed into one of a top European League's top Dman point producers. Go figure!

For all the stabs in the dark the Canes have been taking on the plethora of Russians in the past few drafts...it's nice to see some of those types of wildcards paying off in the NHL around the league.

Last night the Leafs had the debut of Nikita Grebenkin, a late fifth round pick in 2022 out of Russia that was one of the better players on the ice vs Vegas, he was chippy, he was all over the puck in the offensive zone and was exactly the type of player that the Canes hope you find occasionally if you draft enough of those guys. Fifth round picks normally do not have 8-10 AHL games and make an impact in the NHL but Grebenkin looked like the type of keeper over some of the bottom six dreck the Leafs trot out nightly.

Artamonov for the Canes already looks like a a great sleeper pick.

Here is an article on Nikita Artamonov and Alexander Nikishin. Oddly, Nikishin credits TDA with helping him develop better positioning and puck possession skills.

Say what you will about Tony. He was always really good at keeping the puck on his stick. Deciding what to do when he can't, not so much.

Tony has had a solid start for SKA. 21 Games 4 Goals 19 Assists +17. He leads the team in points (despite only playing 21 of 30 games).

He will likely turn that KHL gig into another NHL contract of some kind with some team that gets desperate for NHL D.

That's about his level ... the KHL or the Swedish league. Some slot between the NHL and AHL where defense is encouraged but not required and on a bigger sheet so his skating pays bigger dividends.
