2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

The Flyers sent Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost to Calgary for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2015 2nd and a 2028 7th rounder

Interesting trade of middle 6 players. Kuzmenko has the biggest upside but he has been ice cold the entire season.
He had a great rookie year for Vancouver then a bad start last season but he was the centerpiece of the Lindholm trade. He was nearly a point per game for Calgary after the trade but only 4 goals this year.

He probably needs to start fearing January 31. He was traded to the Flames last January 31, the trade to the Flyers is official today.

That trade is 100% because of Torts. Farabee and Frost are perfectly decent young players in any other system, but forced to endure Torts' nonsense, their offensive pop is well and truly worn to a nub. And the reason Philly felt the need to go get Kuzmenko is because Michkov is growing increasingly isolated, and Torts is jerking him around more and more as he loses confidence. So Briere went out and got him a running buddy. Hey, you know what else you could do? You could go hire a coach who's more interested in developing your young talent and less interested in breaking them. Just a thought. You could also continue to suck for all I care.

The league and NHLPA reached agreement on salary cap increases for the next 3 years, pending extension or modification of the CBA, which expires after next season. Bettman says he hopes to have a new agreement in place sometime this year, potentially before the Cup Final starts in June. The upper limit for next season is $3.1 million more than the figure Bettman announced last month. The ranges for the last 2 years are subject to minor adjustment up or down.

2025-26
Upper Limit: $95.5m
Lower Limit: $70.6m

2026-27
Upper: $104m
Lower: $76.9m

2027-28
Upper: $113.5m
Lower: $83.9m

$113 million in 2027 is going to start segregating teams into budget groups, I'd guess. It may kick in for 2026, honestly. This does make it REALLY obvious as to why Dundon is making that huge play to generate ancillary income.

Elliotte Friedman and Kevin Weekes report that Vegas and Brandon Saad are nearing agreement, 1 year, prorated $1.5 million.

My initial thought was ... does Vegas need Saad? And then I looked a little closer, and they kind of do. They like centers who can play wing, but their firepower is largely up the middle and their scoring has been erratic at times. At this stage, Saad is a one way player, but if they can park him on the wing and let him concentrate on offense ... maybe they can get him going a bit. The price certainly is right. If it doesn't work, you bury the guy and worry about it later.

The Canucks are trying to corner the market on all the Petterssons. The get Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor from the Pens for Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, Melvin Fernstrom and the first rounder they got from the Rangers.

If you’re giving away first round draft picks for players like Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor you deserve where you are in the standings…getting rid of Miller was smart but then following that up with a dumb trade like this is a bit of a head scratcher.

Rutherford loves that dude for some reason. He over-paid to get him in for the Pens when he was GM there, and it's obvious that Jimmy got sick of Allvin dragging his feet on the Miller situation and took the wheel last night. Good return or bad, the Canucks now have normal team problems and can get back to just playing hockey.

JT Miller in that locker room 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He's gonna feel like he won that standoff in Vancouver, which won't help matters much. Lavi is gonna have his hands full with that collection of divas.

And I've seen some indications that Carolina was primarily interested in E Pettersen, although they also talked to Vancouver about Miller. Miller wasn't going to agree to anything until he was dead sure that NY was off the table, so nobody other than the Rangers ever did anything other than kick the tires.

Granlund is a guy I thought might be a fit for the Canes. Expiring deal, can play center, and playing really well this season. Getting rid of that lump Ceci was too good to pass up for San Jose.

Jani Hakanpaa has been ruled out of the 4 Nations Face-Off due to ongoing injury issues. Miro Heiskanen was ruled out earlier this week, so the Finns are down 2 dmen. They named 7 to the roster but only 11 Finns have played in the NHL this season.
