Lafreniere’s deal is complete, 7 years/$7.45 million AAV.

Year 2 $5.5M & 2M SB
Year 3 $8.5M & 1M SB
Year 4 $7.15M
Year 5 to 7: $6M

Years 3-7 include 8 team No Trade List

Honestly ... good business for the Jerks. He's pretty much a point per game guy at this point and without the benefit of heavy special teams use. Big frame, no injury issues as an NHLer ... that could be a big plus value contract in as little as 2 years.

The Leafs got into the deferred compensation business, signing dman Jake McCabe to a 5 year extension with a nominal $4.7 million AAV. However, his cap hit will be $4.51 million with deferred comp figured in.

Here is the breakdown of McCabe’s contract.

Yr 1 775K Base, 5.225M Signing Bonus
Yr 2 1M Base, 1.5M paid SB, 3M SB deferred to Year 6
Yr 3 1M Base, 1.3M paid SB, 2.5M SB deferred to Year 6
Yr 4 2.6M & 1M SB
Yr 5 3.6M

Cash paid 4.7M Average, Cap Hit (w/ deferrals) $4.51M

Yr 1/2 No Trade, Yrs 3-5 16 team no trade

That's a lot of dosh for a very basic defenseman who will be 36 at the end of the deal.
And the Leafs will have more than $24 million tied up on 6 dmen. They have to pay Marner and make a decision on Tavares next summer too.

I refuse to believe that John Tavares is only 34. That dude has been in the NHL for at least 20 years, and I think half of his career goals were scored against the Hurricanes. Sorta like how Roberto Luongo notched 400 victories against the Hurricanes.

If Tavares puts up another 60-something point season, he'll make that decision quite easy for them.

Sometimes change is good, the Leafs simply cannot keep running it back every year with that same rotten core, next summer something is going to give with that bunch...Shanaplan has to go, Marner and Tavares might need to go too, it's past time to free up some cap for something different, you're probably talking upwards of $22 million in cap savings from this years team expenditures if they cut bait with them both.

I'm not so sure that Treliving hasn't been looking at this summer as an inflection point right from when he first got the job. Most of what he's done has been relatively low risk, aside from rolling the dice on some older guys.

Sounds like Utah is moving Olli Maatta to Detroit for a mid-round pick. Utah's a little short on D with injuries to mainstays in Durzi and Marino, so this is weird timing for them. But, Maatta is a very limited one way guy and is on the last year of a contract that was unlikely to be renewed. I think they are more looking at tweaking this season to compete next season, so Utah will probably be pretty active as they make roster decisions for next year.

For Detroit, this doesn't make them younger or more mobile on the back end, so ... yet another "doing something to appear active" move from Yzerman. They're clicking along at a point per game. early on, which is about what the Wings have been doing for going on three seasons now. This doesn't move that needle at all.

The trade went the other way, Detroit traded Maata to Utah

Yeah ... meah culpa on that

Still, a sign of Utah tickering around the edges during the season, which is what I'm expecting them to do. They've got all manner of picks and prospects to move to make roster moves. Maatta does nothing for me in the big picture, but Utah has injuries on D. Detroit? Keep planning guys.

Kevin Weekes says the Preds are moving forward with a $750 million development project for Bridgestone Arena and the surrounding area. Considering where the arena is, I wonder how much “surrounding” area they can impact. It takes up an entire city block and there are established business in 3 sides and a church on the 4th side. Unless they demolish the parking deck on the back of the arena, I don’t know where they can develop.

Yeah ... dunno what they have in mind, really. They could easily sink half of that or more into the existing facility, though.
