2024 Draft

Did a quick review of top-3 picks over last 20-years (2003-2019 since last 4-drafts likely need time before passing any kind of judgement)

2003: Fleury, Staal, Horton
2004: Ovy, Malkin, Barker
2005: Crosby, Ryan, J.Johnson
2006: E.Johnson, J.Staal, Toews
2007: Kane, JVR, Turris
2008: Stamkos, Doughty, Bogosian
2009: Tavares, Hedman, Duchene
2010: Hall, Seguin, Gundbranson
2011: RNH, Landeskog, Huberdeau
2012: Yakupov, Murray, Galchenyuk
2013: MacKinnon, Barkov, Drouin
2014: Ekblad, Reinhart, Draisaitl
2015: McDavid, Eichel, D.Strome
2016: Matthews, Laine, PLD
2017: Hischier, Patrick, Heiskanen
2018: Dahlin, Svechnikov, KK
2019: Hughes, Kaako, Dach

If we define “extremely successful” as being 1st line / 1st pairing…

Almost every draft from 2003-2019 (inclusive) has at least one player in top-3 who failed to meet that criteria (see bold), and I was generous in some cases (E.Johnson, J.Staal in 2006, JVR in 2007, Makar vs Hischier in 2017 etc.) - roughly 30-51 top-3 picks are slam dunks (again being generous) roughly 59%

Out of those 17-drafts, 1OA is the undisputed best player in 10-of them (58% of the time)

NHL draft of 18-yr olds is pretty much a crapshoot…not talking 70%+ success rate
You might want to unbold Reinhart. Just saying.

You can be competent and precautious at the same time. I think they go with the big D. If you're going to be small upfront you need size on the backend.

Im fine with Levshunov, he appears to be a stud, i prefer Demidov, but the D is fine.

But morons saying Lindstrom over Demi cause big or not Russian can fuck all the way off.

That I do agree with.

If you're taking a player over another simply because he's a few inches bigger, then you're fucking up.

Skipping on a small forward to pick a big d-man, though? And both are in the same range? No issue.

I do think it would be better if Chicago took a D.

This kid could be the next Larry Robinson. At least if he hits his complete ceiling. Great offensive instincts/IQ. Big, strong and very mean, crease-clearer. And excellent at puck retrievals. And hates to lose. Not thinking we'd take him at 5, but you never know. Would be wonderful to get an great forward at 5, and try and move up from our WPG pick to add this kid.

There’s no chance the Habs are taking him at 5. None.

I'd never say "no chance" or "none". Let's remember that Bird was a 20OA pick. Likely many said at the time there's no chance he's the next Doug Harvey. But he wound up in the conversation. I'm just saying he has the same attributes in his game/style. Looks similar when you watch him play.
