2024 NHL Playoffs Thread

It's the weather and women
There are women everywhere when you're young, rich, and dumb like most hockey players. And not everyone wants to live in a state with 120% humidity. It's not the women or the weather. It's the fucking MONEY. It's always the fucking money. Players might like weather and women but their agents are laser focused on the important thing: their own commission. It's the money. And if your team operates in a market with taxes so high that it can't compete with a tax free market, all the pussy in the world won't fix it. You need to have a common sense, fair salary cap that is adjusted for each market in order to reflect reality. If that means giving the Habs a $100 million cap just to give them the same purchasing power as the Panthers at an $88 million cap then so be it.

The whole "they have an advantage because they're in a no tax state" is tiresome and honestly, disingenuous.

Was the no tax state the reason they picked up Gustav Forsling on waivers?

Was the no tax state the reason they traded Devon Levi + a late 1st for Reinhart?

Was the no tax state the reason they traded Heineman + a 2nd for Bennett?

Was the no tax state the reason they made the Huberdeau + Weager for Tkachuk trade?

Was the no tax state the reason they drafted Ekblad & Barkov? Then gave them contracts that were in-line with virtually all of their NHL comparables?

You know what their no tax state helped them with? Getting Bobrovsky. But besides that, honestly? You could have taken their moves since they drafted Barkov and named them the "Kansas City Liberals", and the result would be been nearly identical.
No tax is not a cure for bad management. Florida has been terrible pretty much their entire history besides the past couple of years.

But between two teams with good management, the team with less taxes and better weather definitely has the upper hand. Unless your city has special appeal, like New York.

It's not always the money. To live in Edmonton would be about the money.

NYC
California
Florida

Not just about money.

There are advantages you can do something about and there are advantages you can't do anything about. There is no way to make Columbus, Buffalo, or Winnipeg more attractive than NYC (although, again, not everyone necessarily wants to live in a city of 10 million people) And the weather in Florida is better than the weather in Edmonton, at least in the winter. But again, I don't like the oppressive humidity of Florida. Those factors are preferences and things about which the NHL can do nothing.

But evening out the salary cap so that jurisdictions with no state taxes don't have an unfair financial advantage over jurisdictions that pay real taxes? That is something that the league CAN address and correct.

This Stanley Cup final is turning into a bit of a dud, like most of them since the salary cap era. One team clearly better than the other. The only ones that come to mind that were at all interesting or dramatic since 2010 or so were the three involving the Bruins. The most recent being five years ago.

Hoping for a turnaround in game 3 to at least make it somewhat interesting, but this one is taking on an all too familiar pattern. Somehow the league has managed to turn the Stanley Cup finals into about as dramatic an event as a Monday night game in February.

The fact that the Oilers are playing is the only reason I'm watching, and even then I find my attention drifting. It's not very exciting to watch. The previous round was more engaging. If it was Florida vs Dallas I wouldn't be watching at all as I don't give a shit about either franchise.

When the Habs are out , couldnt care less about the rest

teams need to figure out how to fill out the other 93% of their cap and asset and management

Forget the tax stuff and build your roster properly

If your regime is stupid enough to pay dumb money to Gally , Price , Armia, Anderson , etc... no salary cap fix is going to help you

Yes, yes, yes and yes

Forsling, Reinhardt, Bennett would’ve only resigned at much higher AAV in non tax benefit locales. Tkachuk only allowed trades to Fla and STL

Like TBay,Fla team depth is built on a foundation of smart asset targeting but ALSO the ability to execute those moves within a roster construct are 100% due to tax benefit Fla state offers

Not so sure about that

Lets see how Florida handles Reinhart now as a UFA at 29 coming off a once in a lifetime career year

I would let him pound salt anything over 8-8.5 and make calls to Stammer and Marchessault

Regime told Huby to FO

just as both Vasilevky & Bobrovsky’s AAVs we’re less than Price, but take-home was significantly more, it’ll happen for Reinhardt as well, unless he’s willing to sign a bonus heavy contract w a Cdn team which won’t happen since he already said he‘s re-signing, loves the anonymity of playing in Fla as does his wife and ready daily access to the beach.

like they would be cheaper...

Not everyone loves Disney, oppressive humidity and fascism. I can scarcely think of a place I'd want to visit less, never mind live, than Florida. Besides, I hate literally every sports franchise in the state, college and pro.
Remember we have as much fascism here, you just support the fascists here. Yes the humidity can be oppressive but after a week, you are used to it.
