2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

They arent moving on from Marner because he's expensive, they're moving in from Marner because he's garbage in games that matter. He could sign for a dollar a year and he'd still be a waste of money come playoff time.

His regular season points are a nice-to-have, but the Leafs can still make the playoffs without him. But they also can't win playoff games with him. It's not about money at this point. Marner just needs to go.
Marner isn't worth his current contract. How can he justify a raise?

Yes, we bring back a guy who almost hit 40 goals, and scored 5 in the playoffs, and plays 2C for $4M.

He is not going to cost you games, and you won't buy anything remotely close to that value with that money. Just need to figure out a way to have Matthews beast like he can, and surround him with other quality guys.

At least the work done on the roster last year set the D and G for this year (and beyond). So, it's just about reshuffling the forward deck, and seeing if there's a D upgrade to be made that allows you to trade a D and his salary for something up front.

not much choice. they don't have their own picks. can't tank now.

we have to face the fact that the Leafs need to start over again and probably did at least 3 years ago. at this point it's simply marking time until they can do so.

might be time to take a nice break from the team. we'll see, maybe Treliving will surprise me.
They need to let it crash and burn like a 737 Max-8. This can't be fixed in a year and it can't be fixed by tinkering with the bottom 6 while resigning Marner for even more money. Things need to crater. Retooling on the fly isn't a viable option. It needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt from scratch. Keeping Marner merely delays the inevitable.

One of the bigger failures has been that second line at evens, which was supposed to be a second first line. Whether it's been Marner or Nylander with Tavares, it tends to lose its minutes against other top teams in the playoffs. Can't have that when they make as much as they do.

You can't rebuild in a year when you don't have draft pick to rebuild with. We don't have a number 1 until 2028.
That's when you rebuild. If you choose to

He will have an easier time getting a raise from a team he's never played for. The Leafs (one hopes) have reached their limit with him. If they turn around and give him what he wants then they deserve another decade of failure.

It's long past time to turn the page on the Core 4 Era. It should be over. It was tried, it was given the better part of a decade to work and it failed. Time to accept reality and blow it up.

You can trade for draft picks. And every player on the roster save for perhaps Knies should be "touchable". Certainly any or all of the Core 4 should be available at the right price because by the time the rebuild is over they will no longer be superstars. No use in delaying it another year. If you need picks, trade for some. But the tank is going to happen either on purpose or it'll happen organically.

GM's spend like drunken sailors in July. He will get paid

In fairness, it wasn't really the same result this year.

For one thing, it was the core's first time finishing first. They won the first round. They took an amazing team to 7 games in the second round.

Sure, a loss is still a loss, but as far as losses go - and don't get me wrong, the nature of the 6-1 smashing at home is a concern - by all accounts, this was a tangible improvement. And if Florida loses a couple of key guys like Bennett and Marchand without adequately replacing them next year, they may drop a level and make advancing that much more achievable, especially if we've improved the team and don't have the same impactful injuries (Matthews, Stolarz).
Did your core play to expectations ?

Did they score clutch goals or compete like other stars ?

Florida could lose some key players just the Leafs , too many uncertainties in hockey and injuries could derail any team .

Forget the what ifs , Leafs need the DNA change its long overdue

You fired coaches , GM’s , Presidents , etc…

Time to fire the core group that by far has been the most disappointing in NHL playoff history.

No team with 3-4 bonefide front liners has ever had a group underachieve like the Leafs
