2025 NHL Trade Deadline

Theoretical question: If a team offers us a first round pick or a quality prospect, do you trade Matheson?

For example:

Vegas offers us Mathieu Cataford straight up for Matheson.

Minnesota offers us Liam Ohgren straight up for Matheson.

While looking at teams, the vast majority of the contending teams have already traded their 2025 first round pick. So a first round pick coming back would need to be in 2026 or 2027.

I’m not as familiar as you are with those prospects but it would take one hell of an offer for me to move Matheson this year. More than a first for sure. We’re not moving him if we’re in the mix, and even if we drop I doubt it. I like his pairing with Hutson and it might carries on into next year.

We’ll need to secure a replacement before moving him so this summer is more likely.

Nope - playing high intensity late season / playoff games is imperative for the 53% of the players on this roster that have a Habs future.

Can’t pull the feet out from underneath Hutson for some late 1st round pick which historically has 20% chance of ever playing a single NHL game

That’s how I see it too, it would take a stud prospect in return who’s close to contribute for me to consider, but we’ll need to make a decision with Matheson sooner than later.

There will be offers for Matheson next season. For me it's standings dependant this season.

It does take a few years for players to figure out how to be effective defensively in the NHL. I like Beck and I agree with your timeline.
Me too. Expecting him to immediately deliver what Evans has taken years to develop is setting the bar too high.

that hell of a home run offer was in the summer

Problem with MM he is going for his last contract in the Skeji range

Side note - Lane Hutson / Kucherov / MSL etc are specifically why the draft & this whole “need to develop players better” is a red herring, and proof that a player either has elite hunger to work hard to achieve success or they don’t
