2nd Rnd '25 Playoffs: Leafs vs Panthers - Flo-Rida them onto the ECF - LFG!

They’re not making any changes in management. If Shanny goes, he goes. They’ll just name a suit to replace him or give a guy like Gilmour the spot for some feel good feels to the jersey throwers. But GM and coach will be the same, for better or worse.

When cooler heads prevail people will realize that resigning Marner is a strong possibility. Letting him walk for nothing is not something that will be palatable to the higher ups.

Maybe if he agrees to a sign and trade but he didn't agree to move for Rantanen so I don't see that happening.
Yah we do this every year. Emotional hot takes when we get eliminated, only to crawl back again later

Possiblity because the Leafs management has no guts. And as I said before, Marner better brace himself to be serenaded by the home crowd if he signs a big $ contract here.

They have no choice but to try something different this time. Yes anything is possible - the Leafs could run it back again and win 3 Cups in a row - but the far more likely result is that this happens again.

The very fact that the Leafs tried to trade Marner at the deadline suggests that they knew this would probably happen, and I just can't see them re-signing him as a FA. Even though Mitch would've loved to win a Cup in his hometown, deep down he knows he'd be better off playing in San Jose where he can go to the mall and the beach and not get recognized by anyone.

This is what makes it hard to get players to want to play there though.

Marner has all the power. They could make him a fantastic offer and he can still tell them to pound sand. And I don't see them, after another craptastic playoff performance by Marner, offering him what it would take to get him to sign. They'll make an offer, but with the expectation that he will walk.

This pressure narrative is a bit grating. Sure, the Leafs are a unique market in hockey, but if you look at other pro sports leagues (North America and globally) there is no shortage of big markets facing the same pressure challenges. Yet they don’t all lose their elimination games.

Also this pressure seems curiously calibrated — not enough of an obstacle to make the playoffs and force game 7s but just enough to give their opponents the slightest edge when it matters most

Nobody else deals with as many media and fan know it alls, though.

The Lakers win titles in a media market that dwarfs Toronto hockey. The Knicks clutched up huge in a media bubble that is 5-10x ours.

well....the Lakers have one 1 title in the last 15yrs and it took having the goat to do it.

and that's a team with a healthy and consistent tradition of winning from decade to decade.

and a market where they keep having goats drop into their laps.

this is the first time the knicks have made it past the 2nd round in over 25 years.

It’s kind of why I thought the Leafs would advance…. streaks (good or bad) eventually snap

Yup, was gonna make a similar point earlier. I can't imagine it's much fun dealing with the bullshit, but social media is everywhere, and there are multiple big-market teams in every sport that have all-sports talk radio stations - so fucking what? The fact that Vito from Woodbridge disagrees with the deployment of your 3rd line is causing you to lose 6-1 when the chips are on the line? This may be a top 5 issue, but is sure as fuck isn't the only issue, or even in the top 3.

i mean it will snap eventually.

it helps that the celtics were a shampion and they lost their best player too.
