Around the League: 2019-2020 Regular Season

I'm sure it will but to what extent?

Knights bumped the cap (without considering the Union's escalator clause) about 3-5 million by themselves (overall, between franchise fee and increased league revenues) . Seattle will probably do similar. NBC deal is almost up as well (200 million a year currently) and will be renegotiated at a higher number. Ratings have been relatively flat overall, but live sports have become a more valuable property over the last 8-9 years (contract was signed in 2011) due to streaming.

Fwiw, since the NHL signed that US broadcast deal, these were signed:

-NBC bought the rights to show EPL games in the US for 167 million a year in 2015
-NBA signed a 930 million a year deal in 2016
-MLB deal is about 850 million a year, recently extended to 2028

Won't sniff basketball or baseball numbers, but don't be surprised if they double up the old deal. That would be about an extra 3 million in cap.

Seattle + new NBC deal hitting at the same time could pump the cap up another 6-8 million by itself. Also remember that the reason the cap is 81.5 this year instead of 83 is because the Union didn't utilize the escalator clause. They're trying to keep escrow under control, which has become a bigger issue to the union than pumping the cap up (which predominantly helps higher salary players more than the rank and file membership)

Rogers Media cutting costs. Big names like Bob McCown and Cherry getting pink slips.

Good. Hopefully they figure out that over paying for shitty hot takes is a bad business model.

It was a decent business biz model back in the day. Cherry was a poor man's John Madden, the latter revolutionized sportscasting with over the top, high energy ramblings.

Now, it's no longer fresh, just a million shades of noise.

Maybe he will be replaced with Stroumboulopoulos

I liked him but I think they may have had him tagged as the next Ron MacLean.

I think if John Torterella wasn’t coaching I’d give him a shot lol....but he’s American

Aaron Ward is really a blast to listen too...i always love his hits on TSN690, funny, entertaining and insightful.

Steve Simmons is getting ripped for reporting that Don Cherry will no longer be on HNIC

Apparently it's not true.

Hands down the worst sports journalist in this country
