Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

That's nice rationalizing. But the trade still doomed us and made that whole Kessel era - also known as the Burke era - a complete waste of time that required a complete teardown to fix.

It would have required the same tear down either way. Seguin and Hamilton didn't turn out to be the studs our creeping sense of dread told us they were going to be.

They've had very nice careers. Maybe they use the 2nd to take Toffoli or Faulk. Maybe they trade Seguin and/or Hamilton for some great return. We can't know how the rest of those dominoes fall. All we know is that it was clearly dumb to trade those unprotected high futures for a winger when nothing else was in place to succeed, the wrong move even if we got lucky and the three picks would've all busted. Burke's fast track to absolutely nowhere.

Obviously, but so what?

And both of those guys at all times were more value than Kessel when they were healthy. Plus wild card 2nd rounder.

Kessel almost has more playoff points in his 2 cup runs with the pens than Seguin does for his career (45 in 49 vs 49 in 95), but sure.

If our team only played 7 playoff games during the years he was here, maybe the team wasn't in the position to have been selling off multiple 1sts and a 2nd. To be clear, none of this commentary goes to whether Kessel was a great player because he obviously was. But it was a dumb trade. It would be like the Isles or Detroit trading those three picks away right now for Nylander. What for?

That would be an awesome trade for them tbh

It would be an awesome trade for a team that isn't in any way assured a playoff spot and could easily finish bottom 5 (maybe even dead last with a key injury or two) to trade two 1sts and a 2nd for Nylander, even if he was 21?

Then we're right back to 10 years ago. I have a very different approach to team building, and it doesn't involve trading away my best futures when I have zero chance of that trade helping me even get near the cup.

Yeah I think that acquiring young elite players is always wise. The teams that do this typically do quite well.

Leafs at that point should have just done a full rebuild. That's more the issue with the Kessel trade. It wasn't bad trade in itself. I was pretty damn shocked to see Kessel still on the Leafs when both Seguin and Hamilton were already moved by Boston in terrible deals.

The Kessel trade was consistent with a full rebuild though. Its nothing like trading for Nylander, its like a rebuilding team trading for Jack Hughes. Kessel is hall of famer that is going to finish with 400+ goals, 1000 points and 2 cups.

The trade didn't turn out nearly as bad as the haters expected when that pick ended up being #2. Solely because Seguin was overrated and Kessel ended up being the best player in the trade. And Seguin was probably so overrated only because it was the Leafs pick. He was a very talented offensive player, but more like a poor mans Phil Kessel than Ron Francis.

If the Leafs didn't make that trade I'm not sure that history turns out any differently. Swapping Kessel for Seguin and Hamilton certainly doesn't turn the 2008-2015 Leafs teams into contenders, not that we would even want that anyway. There is no way I risk butterfly effecting anything about this current Leafs team.

We even traded Phil for more (Kappy, and 1st (Freddy)) than Boston got for Seguin/Hamilton combined (Louie Eriksson, Rielly Smith, 1st (Zach shenshyn)).

The drafts weren't great when Leafs gave up those picks. Thankfully they had theirs for a full rebuild to draft actual superstars with the top picks.
Seguin's prime was very brief. Hamilton has been so up and down. only 1 real strong year in terms of being a high end D

Issue with PK is he'll make more $ for TNT doing broadcasting. Expect an announcement soon he' s joining them.
Sucks to retire at 33 though. Char is 10 years older and announced today he's retiring.
