Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I'm not sure what anything in the entire hockey playing universe has done to deserve the benefit of the doubt from being considered institutionally racist.

In fact, we have a solid pile of evidence to suggest the opposite. That there is a group chat specifically for players of colour to help each other through the bullshit they've dealt with kind of speaks volumes, no?
 
Yeah Naz didn't necessarily help things with his antics but I have a hard time coming up with a different explanation for the double standard we've seen with him. Like I genuinely think he gets an extra game or two tacked on to his suspensions simply for being brown. They're mostly all deserved but almost always 1-3 games too heavy. I haven't seen that from any white player and I'm not sure I see another explanation.

And shit, he was a diver but the NHL ref vendetta vs him once they figured it out was something I don't really see from other guys. They just stopped calling penalties against him at a certain point. Shit was crazy.

What Parros’s specific motivations were—racism, anti-Leaf bias, pro-Bruin bias or personal antipathy towards Kadri—I can’t claim to know for sure. But I believe something of that sort was going on.

And of course that doesn’t absolve Kadri of all criticism. After the first suspension especially, he should have known not to give Parros any plausible excuse to drop the hammer on him.

I believe any Leaf would’ve received the same. Would Nylander have been let off the hook with a slap on the wrist? But Kadri has always been more of a controversial guy with his scrappy play and goading for penalties and the refs don’t like that stuff, so of course he’s more of a focal point than most.

On the Leafs, it was because he was a Leaf and had a reputation even on his own team. On the Avs, it was because he was already a 2x repeat offender by then. We don’t need to read any racism into this.

Maybe. Can't say I've seen it happen to a white player tho. On the leafs, or otherwise. Can't say I know the cause for sure but it does get me skeptical.
