Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I wanted Karlsson when he was cheap to get. Now any team would likely take on his full contract - and pay for it - and that's probably a bad idea.

Thing is Karlsson is literally one of the best dmen to ever play the game and he's showing he's got plenty of juice left - and he would be dynamite on a better team. He's legitimately Norris caliber right now, which is better than Rielly and most any dman in hockey.

Don't want to go all-in for Karlsson but he is absolutely the kind of player who genuinely moves the needle on our chance for success. He's a gamebreaker. And he's shown this year he still has that gear. In all likelihood he's going to be a terrible long-term add though.

That Bally Sport thing is just ANOTHER reason Bettman has to flucking go. He keeps shitting the bed and the players keep on taking it.

Ridiculous.

Absolutely no reason the players should bear any consequence for the bally's deal... if the players had to repay covid losses then the owners should have to pay for the bally's losses.

I'm shocked star salaries haven't gone up in 20 years. Players are getting f*cked.
Bettman is incompetent.

I was listening to the percentage increase of the other leagues in the last 5 years or so and they are all in the high teens in terms of increase in cap and salary while the nhl is at 4% wtf

NHL is very much reliant on butts in seats for revenues relative to other NA pro leagues. Covid put a huge hole in that NHL business model.

Average salary has doubled, actually.

True, but @JackBurton is right that star salaries have stagnated. Over 20 years ago, the Leafs signed Mats Sundin to a deal that paid him $9M per season.

With inflation since then plus escrow, guys like Tavares, Matthews & Marner are all making less than that.

middle sixers are to blame.

contracts on the low end have been right sized, but teams keep blowing their wads on mediocre 2nd/3rd liners, which makes it impossible to max out studs without killing your cap situation.
