Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Average salary has doubled, actually.
I meant the salaries of stars. It's ridiculous Mcdavid makes about the same as Jagr over 20 years ago given the massive increase in revenue. No sport is like this. 20 years ago Bobby Holik made 9 million per as a UFA. And he was a defensive C. There must be something to the reports NHL stars are embarrassed by this.

middle sixers are to blame.

contracts on the low end have been right sized, but teams keep blowing their wads on mediocre 2nd/3rd liners, which makes it impossible to max out studs without killing your cap situation.
It's the idiotic perception that if a superstar makes 10+ it kills your cap. But everyone ignores the overpays to bottom 6 "talent". This idea stars should take less is moronic. And hockey players try to be nice. NBA players don't give a f*ck.

Its 50/50 HRR , both sides take a hit
I understand what it is... players have nothing to do with the deals that the league negotiates. Owners should take 100% of the hit for the shitty business deals they make. If players sign endorsement deals with terrible vendors who go bankrupt that does not effect the owners at all.

NHL is run horribly by Gary Bettman. 31 years as a sample size now. MLS is passing NHL. No clue how to market this game.

Trades are actually a big talking point for every league. The NHL is so dull now. The cap is a killer.

  • They should have fewer, better teams.
  • Better broadcasts.
  • More rivalry hype.
  • Work with/sponsor entertainment industry to have more movies/shows made about hockey.
  • Play fewer games.
  • Encourage player movement.

1 easy way to help with big trades: no cap hit for any player on an expiring deal who is dealt after Jan 1. Teams can load up and rebuilding teams have a larger pool of buyers.

Also allow hockey players to have a personality

Not making the ice bigger in the 90's was one of the biggest fuck-ups ever. I was calling for it back then. ice is the same size as 100 years ago. More refs players way bigger, much bigger equipment.
I often hear people say but international ice makes it boring. No one is asking for it to be that size, A nice in-between would make a huge differnece.
Also, Gary's "Parity" obsession? It doesn't draw in viewers like he thinks. Star packed dynasties do.
Gary actually let the dead puck era occur and last for over a decade on his watch. What is he good for? And that rule book ROTFL. Let's do everything we can to limit goals!

I don't know if it would necessarily increase excitement but bigger nets should be a given to adjust for goalies being 2x the size as they once were. Not sure bigger ice would help either but that makes some sense too. There is a lot that could be done that hasn't really been explored because in fairness it could make things worse.
