Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

If you want to know why the NHL owners love Bettman and why that loathsome little gnome will be running the league until his death—the Sens are a good illustration.

Purchased by Melnyk for $92M in 2003.

Sold by the Melnyk family for $950M in 2023.

So franchise values are up 10 times and meanwhile, the salary cap has only doubled, roughly. Yeah, I’d say things are going pretty well for the owners.

idk you could probably make a pretty reasonable argument that franchise values could be higher under better leadership that promoted the skill of the game. sports franchise values are at all time highs and tv deals our in the billions with the nhl lagging pretty far behind

Bettman hate is basically anti-semitism.

There's no actual logic to it.
Exactly. Fan viewpoint vs what he was hired to do for the owners. He did that pretty well. Few missteps he refuses to let go of but otherwise? Senators worth a billion? Yeah he did his job.

Can someone provide a reason the sens are worth more than an expansion team?

90% of the sens = $950MM (~1.055 billion valuation)

Expansion team was last $650MM

The sens "brand" can't be worth the difference, they actively need a new stadium and the roster isn't much closer to competing than the expansion rosters have been.

Artificial inflation of price by closing expansion for awhile.

Brand, good will, and an established hockey market.

Also expansion team prices are a bit artificial. The league decides where it’s going to expand and looks for someone willing to take the risk. If they had an auction and the winner could put the team anywhere, they’d get a lot more than $650M. And there would be 5 teams in the GTA.

I’d imagine there’s quite a bit of additional expense in doing extensive and sometimes years-long lobbying of both the league and the city you want to play in for an expansion team. While if you buy an existing team you have the luxury of not dealing with any of that and pay a premium as a result.

Not to mention that the price paid to the league for an expansion team is for the team only, whereas the new owner of the Sens is buying the team, their existing arena and their practice facility.
