Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Like is it because you don't follow hockey that you don't realize the players waive NMCs all the time?

I dunno, I think you do follow hockey - so what is the explanation for not realizing it? it's bizarre.

Do players leave contenders though?

You keep saying this, but can you think of any examples of Leafs who’ve waived NMC’s or NTC’s?

‘Cos I can think of a bunch of examples of guys who refused to waive, but not the other way around. Kadri, Sundin and the rest of the stupidly-named “Muskoka 5”.

Phil & Dion both had NTC’s that covered all but 8-10 teams. The Leafs then traded both to teams on their small trade lists—suggesting that either they explicitly refused to waive their NTC’s, or the Leafs didn’t believe they would if asked and didn’t bother.

It's amazing the special rules leafs fans convince themselves apply only to their leafs.

They've already forgotten that they spent years convinced that Mathews was leaving.
I mean, these are 2 of the weakest strawmen arguments I've ever seen.

Not sure what is so difficult to understand about this?

Players get nmc and no-trade clauses for a reason, and they will waive them if they have a good reason to. A guy who signs for his favourite team in his hometown city is obviously less likely to do so. And there's no reason to do so to move from a top Cup contender to a non-playoff or bubble team.

Most times when a team asks a player to waive, even if they signed as a free agent with their hometown team, it's to go from a non-playoff team to a contender... At which point they pick 1-3 teams they're willing to go to, that team throws them some extra cash and they move on.

Even then, there's no guarantee. The last time a guy refused to waive his ntc was... A couple of weeks ago? And than was even from a non-playoff team to a top WS contender.

do you not find it at all funny that 3 of the 4 leafs you just mentioned in this post were traded with NMC/NTCs?

and that whole muskoka 5 thing was a completely different scenario anyways - that was a leafs team with a bunch of impending UFAs who wanted to blow it up at the deadline and rebuild, when they thought they could still make the playoffs. Not a contender in need of capspace.

in our current scenario, Tavares would literally be fucking over all his teammates, which is completely different.

None of the guys traded had full NMC’s. And none of them had NTC’s that covered the teams the Leafs traded them to. So not really sure how that’s a “gotcha”. None of them waived anything. And for a few of them it’s confirmed that they explicitly refused to waive when asked.

And I seriously doubt any of his teammates would view Tavares refusing to waive his NMC as “fucking them over”.

It would be a pretty cut-throat move to ask your captain, and biggest fan to waive his NMC in order to free up some cap-space to what... save Timmins and Laffitup from waivers?

I'm pretty sure everyone, including Tavares, would consider it fucking the team over if they have a chance to use his capspace on a young franchise piece and he blocks it just because he has one year left on his deal.

Haha. Tavares is fucking over his teammates now.

Who has $11m of cap space and money and reason (competing for the cup) to be the prime candidates to take Tavares?

Which incredible players are we trying to add that we need $11m of cap space, and what are we trading for them other than the same Tavares contract that you think is killing the team for some reason?

What example is there of a top 5 team in the midst of its most critical years desperately trying to dump a PPG 35+ goal scorer who only has 2 years left on his deal and is the captain of the team, no less?

What possible incentive could there be for Tavares to uproot his young family, leave his home, his childhood team, the team he waited out his NYI contract to sign with, the team he left money on the table to join, the team that is one of the favorites to win the cup? I mean, other than the obvious one of MAYBE being asked to come back three seasons from now after missing two prime years of the team’s window?

Answers to these questions and more on the next episode of When Will Zeke Finally Sober Up?

I seriously doubt your typical hockey player thinks the same way about their longtime teammates as your average fantasy hockey GM thinks of their players.

Especially if you also have an NMC or NTC yourself.

the best argument you guys have come up with is that he will deliberately sabotage the team he wants to retire with, and make it MORE likely that he has to uproot his poor beloved family longterm.

not a very good argument tbh.

isn't is a lot easier to just ask William Nylander to stop fucking his teammates over and deliberately sabotaging his team, and sign for $8.5?

I can only imagine how he’s chomping at the bit to fuck the Leafs over by maybe even scoring 40 this year! Sweet, sweet sabotage!

This is the dumbest shit ever.

No, that’s the argument you need to focus on to avoid addressing all the other points that have already been made.
