Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I've started changing my views on prospects rankings the last few years. I like Columbus's prospect pool much more than my Habs, for example.

The vast majority of prospects don't pan out, but of the ones they have, do they have impact prospects? They have at least three in Fantilli, Jiricek & Johnson. You can build around those three as your #1 & #2 centers, and maybe a first pairing d-man.

That's the only thing I really care about in the rankings. To me, it's Reinbacher / Slafkovsky / Hutson compared to Fantilli / Jiricek / Johnson. I'll take Columbus's 3 players over ours without hesitation.

The rest are a bunch of TBD prospects that every other organization has. Some will inevitably make it, most won't.

I generally agree that there's more value in weighting the top of your prospect list when it comes to comparisons. The 5-15 guys very rarely make a big difference in a team's trajectory.

With that said, Fantilli-Jiricek-Johnson is fine, just fine for a bad team to have at the top of their system. But yes, I take those 3 over the Habs top 3 easily. I'm not exactly high on the drafting that has been going on over in Montreal the last few years.

How can the GM stay and how can Jenner remain captain?
If this was Montreal or Toronto Jenner would be f*cked and calls everywhere for him to give up the C. He spoke for everyone when some of his teammates obviously didn't like Babs.

I don't think he did. He was asked a question, and answered about his own experience.

"While meeting with Babs he asked me about my family and where I'm from, my upcoming wedding and hockey-related stuff. He then asked if I had pictures of my family and I was happy to share some with him. He showed me pictures of his family.

"I thought it was a great first meeting and a good way for us to start to build a relationship. To have this blown out of proportion is truly disappointing."

I'm also not sure the prospect pool is as good as it should be for a team that hasn't been competitively relevant for a while.

Fantilli is real gud, but I don't think he's program changing good. Probably a good 1C, which is a hell of a nice piece but there needs to be more and other than Jiricek I don't see a lot of star level upside here. I know Jackets fans are high on Brindley & Mateychuk but I don't see a whole lot of difference between their performance and kids we like but aren't hyping at all like Moldenhauer & Villeneuve. Dumais might be a thing, but I refuse to take performance in the Q seriously anymore.

I like Fantilli & Jiricek a lot, but it's basically those 2 and Kent Johnson on an island. I'm sure there's a few more players in their system that will grow into the league eventually, but it's not a system that is exploding with talent and has a contending generation coming through or something.
Jiricek is a stud #1 d-man, for sure. Fantilli looking like a #1C, Kent Johnson has star upside.

Huge step-back last year for Cole Sillinger, but still just 20 and should be a top-9 guy in some capacity. Dumais & Brindley look like potential top 6 pieces, then you throw Gaudreau and Laine in there, plus Jenner, Marchenko, Bemstrom. Pretty good forward group imo.

Mateychuk, Svozil, Ceulemens pretty good prospects to back up Jiricek, Werenski, Provorov, Boqvist, Peeke.

Obviously not everyone makes it or sticks around but if they can hit on Kent Johnson they're going to be really good.

I think what he said was fine up til the last line tbh. I just kinda feel like a captain might wanna talk to his teammates before saying that it was blown outta proportion.
That's fair, just saying it's unreasonable to suggest he spoke "for everyone" or that they need to strip off the C.

Ya. Toed the line. What kind of leader does that without knowing what was happening?

Also it was stupid of the team to release any statement from him.

Yeah, I don't see it.

I don't see Johnson's star upside, more Top 6 LW than star LW. Also, don't see this group of prospects behind the three mentioned ready in time to be part of something with Laine (3 years and likely gone), Gaudreau while he's good (already 30), & Jenner (already 30 as well).

It looks to me like a group of kids that are going to start arriving when it's time to replace those guys, not slot in with them. A group that isn't good enough now, and a group of kids that aren't going to be a very good core unto themselves later.

I don't really get how you separate one part of what he says from the other tbh.
IMO, if he just shared his own experience/feelings about it, that’d be fine. Not everyone is gonna feel uncomfortable by the request and perhaps their interaction went a lot differently. But to go as far as saying something was blown out of proportion seems like he either didn’t talk to his teammates or didn’t care they were uncomfortable.

but if your point was don’t make the statement at all, I get that too.

Its not even close , Habs may have the better 5-15 upside but top 3 is all CBJ

Guys in Canada would never to make the risk of reporting that stuff. Dreger seemed to be so cautious just to suggest babcock might be done 2 days ago.
That acclaimed 32 thoughts podcast...I don't know how anyone can listen to that. Two boring guys afraid to give their opinions.

Bullshit. The entire "It really wasn't a big deal" narrative was always a lie. Bissonnette said what he said because someone on the Jackets' roster told him what went down and how it went down. This was just Babcock being his usual clueless dinosaur self. He has learned NOTHING.
