Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Hyman is playing great next to Connor, but even hymans biggest supporters here were never guessing that he had 80+ points in those hands of stone. You just have to make the best decisions using the best information you have at the time and giving 7-8 years at 5+ to hyman would have been pretty crazy all things considered.

We've also managed to replace what he was bringing to the top 6 for 3 years running now without much of a problem, for cheaper or less term related risk.

Tavares has been super snakebit for several games now, lots of posts and great saves on him. Just checked to see where his shooting percentage lands career-wise, and not surprisingly, it’s currently the lowest it’s ever been. He’s due for some.

McCann painful given it was a total unforced error.

Hyman surprising gut punch.

ROR annoying given where he went and the peanuts he took to go there.

Bunting and Mikky unfortunate, but contracts wouldn’t work here for what they bring.

The Hyman deal didn’t look like a good one when signed, but damn has he ever lived up to it so far.

He's kind of ideal for the direct to the net hockey Connor plays. For better or worse, our star players need to work the puck around the offensive zone more and watching Hyman try to get the puck back to Auston, Mitch, or Willy was fucking painful.

But yeah, it's been a steal for Edmonton. Some styles of play just click with certain guys, and it's not too hard to click with Connor if you're an elite plumber who goes to the net.

He’s worked on his game and improved his skill somehow. It’s not all McDavid. You can see it in the highlights regularly.

I don't think I'm that upset about almost any of them tbh.

Kadri was definitely the worst.

Yeah. You're going to makes trades and lose good players from time to time, the key is to get value in return. The trade with LA was fine, we paid full value for Muzzin (it felt like more of a steal at the time definitely) but Muzzin was good for us until he broke down and died. We got value in return. Verhaege, funny enough, hurts me a bit because he's the type of prospect that you just let marinate in your system and be patient with but a new regime came in and did dumb new regime shit.

Kadri though....fuck. I also reacted emotionally at the time Kadri got punted out of the playoffs again, and also kind of agreed with the idea of trading him. Even thought that Barrie+Kerfoot was a good deal for him considering how bad our right side of the blueline was at moving the puck, but man I was wrong. That turned out so fucking brutal.

I feel like I was one of the few who wanted to keep him at the time. Having said that, I expected him to be traded regardless.

Barrie being barely an NHLer was not expected by really anyone either.

But yeah, that one sure stings in hindsight. Especially cause Naz was on such a team-friendly deal.

The Kadri deal was a roller coaster of emotions for me. At first I was stoked and thought it was brilliant. Then I dug deeper into Barrie's nerdies and I was like fuck... Then I started bashing analytics and nerds because I was in deep denial and wanted to convince myself that there were some super secret nerd stats that made Barrie super elite. And then I claimed Kerf is just a younger Kadri so it's ok.

And I was in on wanting to trade Kadri for a D. He was their best trade chip and they legitimately needed a D (and Brodie would have been it). I just tried to convince myself that nerds suck ass RE: barrie. Kinda like what I attempted with Klingberg this summer, though I was far more hesitant with him. Lessons were learned from last time.

the thing is Kadri was on a steep decline by every measurewhen we moved him. He was plain mediocre as a 3C at the time, after being a borderline 1C in earlier years.

turns out it was a temporary blip, not a permanent decline. and we sold very, very low.

but management, with firsthand knowledge of the player, should have better known the reasons why he wasn't playing well, more than we ever could.
