Yeah, they're technically expiring contracts. Can't go trading Knies, Robertson, or Cowan for them imo. Neither are really having crackers of a season either.

Just looking around the league at Dom's model to see potential under the radar additions, and damn Florida is good. Verheghe, Bennett, Rodriguez, Forsling, Mountour, Mikkola. They are just finding cheap studs all over the place.

Monahan is having the best counting stat season since he was 24-25 yrs old, Lindholm having the worst since his trade to Calgary. Monahan traditionally mediocre or worse nerdies in neutral or soft usage, Lindholm traditionally fantastic nerdies in heavy lifting usage.

Even the counting stat production, Lindholm has 20 points at even strength, to Monahan's 16 .

If you trade for Monahan you're bringing in a mediocre #2-3C who needs sheltering while not being very good offensively and has pretty turrible durability. If you bring in Lindholm, you're bringing in a guy who has been a solid 2 way #2C this season but has been a good #1C with strong 2 way play in heavy usage for the last ~5 years but is in the middle of a down year by his standard. There's legitimate promise of a bounce back to #1C level play with him.

They're just not the same despite #Habsfans attempts to make it look similar.

What Monahan is doing with the Habs this year is the equivalent of PA Parenteau scoring 20 goals & 40+ points with the Tank-for-Matthews Leafs

Forsling and Verhaeghe are the real genius pickups there. Borderline elite players plucked off waivers.

Toffoli was a very nice midseason trade for Brad. It cost him a top-10 protected 1st rounder. Toffoli was in the middle of the 2nd year of a 4yr x $4.25m contract, so he was signed for that year plus 2. He's produced at a ~30gl/65pt pace since the trade. Good enough to be traded with one year left on his deal to NJ for Sharangovich and a 3rd rounder, and Sharangovich is at around a 35/60 pace this year now.
