Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

He's 21 yrs old and massive, he probably thinks he's pretty close to indestrucible and 21 yr olds from 'Berta aren't exactly known for making life decisions based on a careful measuring of the available evidence in front of them.

This is a kid who scored a combined 30 goals over 3 seasons in the Dub, the only way he makes the NHL at all (nevermind at 21 ffs) is by punching the faces real good.

I do wonder if the NHL still thinks they need fighting to attract the American viewers, or its just the fucking boomer in the leather jacket with Bruins patches and their hat they got for free in a Coors lite case that are clamouring for this to be part of the game.

I do suppose if you removed fighting these fuckers would be pissed off, not understand the decision and use homophobic slurs to describe the game today, and then call someone who tries to explain that fighting is bad a pussy, and slowly but surely alienate everyone in their life with their outdated and concerning views, and maybe end their own life?....Guess it ends in suicide either way, but im okay more with the latter

Fighting would be easy to phase out and letting it die on the vine rather than bringing the hammer down all at once.

Start handing out instigator penalties more often, but attach an automatic 10 minute misconduct to it. Once that's normalized, make the instigator a match penalty. Hopefully by that point we have some sort of functioning VAR that can be used at referees discretion so they're not getting that shit wrong.

So fighting would still be "allowed" but anyone who clearly instigates a fight would be tossed. This would probably require the instigator rule to be codified a bit better to stop pests from goading players into fights with cheap bullshit in scrums and then getting them booted.

Slowly ratchet from there until it just exits the game culturally.

Fighting should be an automatic date with the concussion spotters in a dark room.

fighting should = suspension Imagine if football players were allowed to fight on field.. and these guys move faster

Ken Campbell is 100% right here. SN should never have posted this fight just a few hours after news of Simon's passing. Predictably, he's being shit on for this in the comments.

even as a fan myself, I enjoy watching fights a lot less now than I used to. and by a lot less, I mean barely at all. especially the stupid goon on goon predetermined ones. save your knuckles and brain cells guys. the skills plays are way more entertaining.

Think the only place where the science is lacking is not being able to diagnose the likely shitload of players suffering from CTE symptoms with CTE until they die. Guarantee you there are so many families that believe their loved ones have it.

Weasel of course knows full well to say anything else opens up the league to huge legal liability in the future

The liability is coming regardless and it will be worse when his emails are subpoenaed and he's admitting knowledge in private while playing this game in public. Maybe be proactive and work with the PA to do the right thing as much as it can be done?

Non hockey, but this case is interesting in regards to concussions. This guy took unprotected chair shots nightly for years. No, not an excuse for his actions at all. But the damage to his brain was shocking.

"The tests, conducted by Julian Bailes of the Sports Legacy Institute, show that Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient"
