Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Just in time for a well-deserved above market raise for Marner.

While lowballing Lilly into some shit two year deal and then trading him when he wants to be paid at the end of it.

Anyone catch the story about the Coyotes fan who gave Shane Doan his jersey retirement banner after last night’s game?

Apparently the Coyotes left it behind at their former arena in Glendale and never responded to requests to pick it up. Eventually the arena threw it out and this random Coyotes fan fished it out of a dumpster before eventually returning it to Doan.

Quite a legacy for a 21-year career with the same team.

Got a link to that?

The fact that the banner was chucked into a dumpster and not quietly stolen by someone working at the arena tells you all you ever needed to know about just how little hockey matters in AZ. The guy who binned it probably had no idea that the banner had any monetary value and likely had no clue who Shane Doan is and wouldn't care if he did know.

But Bettman will make sure the league someday goes back to this place where no one gives a shit. He will never entertain the thought of going back to Quebec, however.

that anecdote sums up that franchise pretty perfectly

Gila probably held a lot of stuff back, if ownership owed money. Not sure why they'd toss it though, rather than sell or auction it off?

He's not wrong. That franchise was always irrelevant from the minute it arrived in Phoenix and was shoehorned into a basketball arena. It only survived as long as it did because Bettman moved heaven and earth to keep it solvent. He didn't work half as hard to keep the Jets in Winnipeg before they were moved there. Bettman doesn't care about cities full of people and whether or not they have any desire to have a hockey team. He only sees "television markets" he can use to try and get money out of the networks for a national broadcast deal. It doesn't matter that a market of 2 million has practically no hockey fans at all. As far as Bettman is concerned, it's a market of 2 million potential hockey fans.
