Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I also think Vlasic is criminally underrated as a potential top pairing D, which allows for a Korchinski/Jones middle pair, which, is potentially also really really good.

Perhaps. I think they surprise. MSL gets them to go through walls for him.
I mean bully for him, but they are in the toughest division in hockey and are not very good yet.

Even Detroit and Buffalo who don't impress me, seem to be at least a year ahead in terms of developing whatever it is they are doing, and im told Ottawa is in phase 8 of a three phase rebuild, so, watch out for that.

With teams that are declining. The division will look differently in 2-3 years. I'm not expecting a contender before then.

They do give the Bruins and Leafs fits but yes, they'll need to feast on the west to have any sort of success.

Oh for sure, but we are talking about next year in terms of the argument of MON/CHI. I expect Chicago near the top of the Central in 3 years as well

Probabilities again. Could be right, could be wrong. I don't think they're near a contender but they're rebuilding properly. Didn't load up with junk like Chicago and Detroit. Truthfully I expected them to and am relieved they didn't.

If it turns out they're another bottom five team this season? Just means more for the cupboard. I don't think they will be should they be healthy but if that's the way it shakes out then it's still a win because there's no cup going to Montreal this year. I like the proper rebuild.
Rebuild is going better than expected , about fucken time a Hab regime had a functioning clue

1) All things are probabilities. Not all things are equally probable though.

2) Chicago and Detroit didn't load up with junk. They're not winning a cup, but they're also both pretty full of competent NHL players. They're short on high end skill though, so are probably hard capped in that 75-90 point range.

3) Montreal's rebuild is in a weird place. They've added some good young talent, but no great young talent. Going to be hard to put a contender level core in place before the team is too good to pick in the bottom 5 but not good enough to crack the top 10.

As soon as the organization finally joined the 21st century and expanded their pool of candidates beyond whatever French-Canadian and/or unqualified French ex-Hab player happened to be available, things started looking up for you guys.

They have Anderson and Gallagher locked up for years more.

Nothing to worry about, they'll still be there when the young guys emerge.

We also have retention spots. No point in moving them now when the Habs still wouldn't be contenders. I don't like dead cap. Pay them as long as you can then punt. Plenty of assets to move both if they really wanted.

We've seen this movie before though. Many times. The only way you'll really find out what you have in your system is to let them play. Some you thought little of may surprise and others you think more of may fail, that's life and hockey.

Habs have done what the Hawks are doing. Many have, even the Leafs. It could work but after decades of this kind of crap it's likely not going to work. I'll remind you that it took a stripped down (intended pun) Hawks team to rebuild then they win a cup.
Hawks fucked up years ago not capitalizing on any return for their aging vets , the rebuild could off been 3-4 years ahead of schedule

When you strip it to the ground your hoping and banking on ping pong balls and a ton of luck on draft picks , and that could take a very long time

For me teams should be retooling every year like TBay is doing unloading Sergashev for youth and staying competitive

However the Hawks are not making any real stupid moves hindering hopes of the rebuild

Most of this is gone by the time they might be contenders , but they had to give Bedard some help right now

But when those ping pong balls hit.....

Bedard is the type of franchise player you build a program around. I just don't see that in Montreal.

Crazy thing is that Gallagher & Anderson both actually managed to stay healthy last year, with only 9 missed games combined between the two of them.

And yet the two of them still only combined for 25 goals & 51 points. Yikes. Gotta figure the Habs might try and Robidas the remainder of their contracts at some point.
